Permafrost crouched over the small pile of snow. "Tonight's the night," said her husband, sidling up from the shadows. She said nothing, but her tail twitched slightly, the spikes on the end rattling together. Darkness sighed. Permafrost was like that. When she resolved to help something, or to do a certain task, then that task would be done, no questions asked. That had been why she had been one of Queen Glacier's most trusted soldiers. She was good at carrying out any task, no matter how dirty, no matter how silly. And now her task was to care for a hybrid egg. Now, the IceWing was scooping away a small amount of snow, to see how the egg was doing underneath. Darkness went still, his strong hearing picking up a small sound, like cracking ice. "Don't touch it!" he cried out, seizing Permafrost's talon. "It's hatching." The couple froze, watching the small expanse of black shell that was visible. As they watched, a silver shape started to wriggle beneath the smooth covering. A thin crack appeared, and more and more spread across the shell. A black snout peeped through the snow pile, and Darkness scrambled forward, brushing snow off the egg. Permafrost hesitated for a moment, her silver eyes watching the tiny snout, before joining in. Together, the couple carefully lifted the egg from the snow. The dragonet's head was now wriggling through the hole, its claws also poking out. Darkness sat back, watching his mate brush her serrated claws briefly over the black shell. She then joined him, leaning into his side. Her chilly scales were oddly comforting to the NightWing, and together, they watched their dragonet break the shell away. Moments later, the newly hatched NightWing-IceWing hybrid crawled from the egg, a little unsteady on miniscule talons. It was a female, and she was beautiful. Her scales were black, with hints of sapphire blue. Her eyes were icy blue, matching the blue diamond earrings that Permafrost always wore. The dragonet also had the extra ruff of horns around her head that all IceWings had. Her claws were ridged, but her tail was spikeless. Her wings were the most stunning thing about her, fading from black scales to icy blue, the membranes purest white, and instead of her father's silver star scales on the underside of her wings, she had black scales. Permafrost crept forward, a claw outstretched. "Hello, little one," she whispered. The dragonet stared up at her mother, and gave a little squeak. "Yes, I'm your mother," Permafrost said, holding out her talon. The dragonet eagerly clambered into her talon, curling up against the smooth, cold scales. Darkness came forward, looking down at their newly-hatched dragonet. He ruffled his wings proudly, wrapping one around Permafrost. "What should we name her?" he asked her. "How about...." Her mother trailed off. "Blackice." "Yes, that would be a lovely name," Darkness replied. He looked down at her. "Her name shall be Blackice."
