CHAPTER 52: WAITING

Ness had left for La Push yesterday with Jacob and they were due home any minute. I had been a nervous wreck since the moment they left. I knew that when Ness came home she would be an engaged woman and not my little girl anymore.  

"How long can it take to drive home?" I mumbled as I paced the living room floor.  

"I really wish you would tell us what all the fuss is about" Rose sighed. We hadn't told the rest of the family what Jacob had intended on doing yet. We thought that it might be a bit too much for Ness to bear if everyone knew before she did and I was sure she would like to have people to announce her 'good' new's to. Edward, obviously knew exactly what Jake had planned but he wouldn't tell me, he said he wanted me to hear it from Nessie's perspective. I was pacing the floor and worrying so much that I almost didn't hear when the phone began ringing.

"Hello?" Esme said, answering the phone. "Oh yes, one moment- Bella?" she called, holding the phone away from her.  

"Yeah?" I mumbled, still not really paying attention  

"It's your Dad dear"  

"Oh" I replied, making my way over to take the phone from her outstretched hand, "Hello?"  

"Bella!" he exclaimed, sounding slightly annoyed "Did you know about this?"  

"Calm down Dad, know about what?" What was going on now?  

"Ness and Jacob!" he shrieked, "Their... their... engaged" he spat, whispering the last word as if it was a crime  

"Yes I know" I sighed into the phone  

"And you allowed it?" he screamed into the phone  

"Dad, calm down!" I told him  

"Calm down? Calm down?" he repeated "you tell me you allowed your 6 year old daughter to get engaged and you want me to calm down?"  

"Dad" I sighed "Nothing's going to happen right away, so stop panicking"  

"I can't believe you agreed to this" he sighed  

"Dad?" I asked "How did you know?"  

"They came to see me" he told me  

"What? When?"  

"They've just left Bells" he groaned, "they didn't stay long"  

"They just left?" I asked "But they were meant to be home about now!"  

"Look's like they'll be late then" he scoffed.  

"Right, OK Dad. Can I speak to you later?"  

"Sure Bells, but this isn't over"  

"I know, I'll speak to you soon OK? Bye Dad"  

"Love you Bells"  

"You too" I said, hanging up the phone.

"What's wrong love?" Edward asked, running to my side  

"They've just left Charlie's" I sighed "They were meant to be home, they'll be driving in the dark at this rate" I said, looking up the clock which was already reading 5.18 pm.
