Mochi and Kaito, they're childhood friends. To explain why Kaito is missing his one arm, and why both he and Mochi are forever haunted by that dreadful, sinful accident, here is the true story behind Kaito loosing an arm. This chapter is a flashback.
A young Mochi, who's shoulder-length hair was up in adorable twintails, bounced up and down as she hopped around in one spot. Her vivid golden eyes sparkled like a diamond as she was peering over at a young Kaito's sheet music, who was sitting by a piano, examining the notes.
"Kaito, Kaito! Can you please play "Cantarella" again? I'm bored of "The Riddle Solver Who Can't Solve Riddles", the tune is so weird and out-of-place, even though you play it perfectly!
The handsome little boy beside her chuckles. "Are you sure you're not the weird one, Momo?"
Mochi gasps, looking very offended, and puffs out her cheeks, crossing her arms. "Hmph! Meanie, I'm not a weirdo! And how many times did I have to tell you not to call me Momo?! IT'S SO DUUUUMB!!" She screeches, stomping her feet.
"H-Hey, chill out! We'll get in trouble and you might be sent home early by your parents. Sheesh..." Kaito shakes his head, letting out an exasperated sigh. "Alright, I'll play Cantarella for the 50th time again today, princess. As long as you maybe...sing with me?" He blushes profusely as he smiles sweetly.
"Ah, but of course! I loooove singing!" Mochi squeals as she hugs him. "You're the bestest friend I could ever have, Kaito!!"
Kaito giggles as he hugs her back. "Don't flatter me like that." He turns away and coughs a little before facing the girl again. "This might sound weird, but, I'm glad I get to wrap my arms around you like this. I can always hug you whenever I want, whenever I feel down, and whenever you need some comfort."
Mochi beams brightly as she looks up at him. "Yeah! The feeling of your arms securely being around me is the best feeling ever! I'll never get tired of it, ever!"
5 years into the future...
"Kaito, hussle! We can't afford to die!"
The mansion Kaito has always lived in is burning into blazing, crackling flames. The red-orange lights danced around like crazy, and as the seconds tick by, more and more of the remains disappear and turn into ashes. Kaito and his father just made it out. But unfortunately...
"H-Help..!!! Come back, wait for me! I'm stuck! Help! Please!!!"
Mochi nearly made it out, but was stuck between a door. The roaring flames were nearly catching up to her. If she couldn't make it out, she's done for, doomed to parish away with the rest of the mansion.
Kaito hears those dreadful screams and helpless pleads. He whips his head around. "Mochi! Hold on..! I'll be right there!"
He dashes over, making a run for his life, desperately trying to reach her. He could hear his father yelling out "What are you doing?! Stop! You're going to kill yourself!" from behind him, but he didn't care. All that mattered to him now was saving her.
"Mochi!" Kaito made it, and just in time, too. He quickly pulls the door open with one hand, and then wraps his arm around Mochi bringing her to his chest, then grabs takes her hand, pulling her out and away from the door completely.
"Agh!" She falls to the ground, but quickly picks herself up. She was safe. Kaito..he rescued her. There was not a single moment to waste now. They can both get out of this alive.
"Thank you Kaito! Come on now. We gotta go!"
But much to her dismay, the door closed in on Kaito as well. His arm was trapped in between. "Ugh!" He knew he wasn't gonna make it in time, he desperately tried to pull his arm out with the one hand he had left with him.
But by the time he set himself free...he let out a pained scream of dread, horror, and agony.
There was nothing attached to his shoulder anymore.
He sacrificed himself for the girl he cared so much for.
And now, he only has one, stable, functioning arm.
The other one?
It burned and drizzled into ashes, caught in the roaring fire.
