“What’s this I hear about skipping your sister’s birthday party? You know how much it meant to her, correct?”

“Yes mother. I-”

“Went off to catch up with some friends, I know. Did you at least stay for the legal handoff?”

“There was a legal hand off?”

“Yes, Katie.”

“Pippi’s going to be the next queen?” I say, startled. “That’s not a very good idea... Actually, that’s, a horrible idea!”

“Honey, she’s the oldest, of course she’s going to be the next queen.”

“When does this take effect?” I reply, worried.

“When she reaches 18.” Lavern says.

“Have you found a suitor?”

“No, but we are searching-”

“Pippi won’t approve.” I mutter.

“She probably won’t, Katie, but it’s the rules.” Lavern states.

“Yeah, but since you’re the first Fraunce Queen, you didn’t know anybody, or have fallen for anybody, Mother Nature just made you get married! To some complete stranger!”

“And I loved that complete stranger!” Lavern bellows. I recoil, knowing she was getting worked up. After a few deep breaths, she starts over.

“Does Pippi, have someone in mind?”

“She’s... Been talking to the Monarch’s oldest, Chase... She went to visit him a couple days ago.”

“Oh, he’ll never do. We can’t have her children in the same position as you.”

“Chase is a worker fairy, not an element. They’ll ethier have a fire fairy or a worker fairy.”

“Oh. Well, then... I’ll just have to... Talk to her. Mixes aren't exactly... It hurts, right?”

“Kinda.”

“Sorry, honey. Sorry that I didn’t tell you about Sliver- I mean your mother earlier.”

“Sliver?” I ask, scared. She was the Snow Queen who tried to make it snow in the summer months. No one could describe how awfully powerful she was, killing woman and children, and unarmed men along with troops. The armies had chased her away to Arstoina, and she was never seen again...

If what I predicted was corrected, I would be a part of her.

“Katie, Sliver is your mother.”

I fainted.

******************************************************************************

I flutter my eyes open, feeling my surroundings.

Lavern... Pippi... Queen... Sliver.

I twitch a little, remembering my dark heritage. I didn't think Pippi knew, and Lavern would probably talk to her about Chase. then she would come consult me about telling her mother, and a bunch more Pippi issues than I could handle at the moment.

And one would change from all the rest.

I remember the prophecy vaguely. The next line was "One will take the responsibilities of the dead". I wondered if Lavern or Mother Nature would die and Pippi or Sarah would take their place. I quickly shoved the thought from my mind. Losing Mother Nature would force the whole kingdom to crumble. The loss of Lavern would be devastating, but not as big of a impact.
