we had to walk back up to the bus stop

then catch a bus. It was 6 when we reached

home, all this time we had kept quite. None

of us uttered a word. And all this time I had

been only thinking of the argument.  We

were sitting on the couch. “do you think that

she  killed him?” Priyanka said.

“but……….some how I don’t think she had

killed him. If she had then why would she

come all the way from her house at mid night

to a lonely and haunted looking street?” “you

have a point. you know what…it’s better to

have a book and note down our thoughts,

suspects and all the evidence we get.” “Now,

you sound like a pro detective.”

“obviously….who’s child am I ?” she winked at

me and we laughed. Her father is a police

man. He is in a higher position. A respectable

man he is. And suddenly a thought struck

me. “hey Priyanka, why don’t we take help of

your dad?”

“I already told you that he’s not in town.

He is on a mission already, and its not

advisable to tell him.” “why not? He is a

respectable police man. And ……” “ he would

ask her to file a complaint. And you know she

won’t.” “when she doesn't think it’s

important, why should we? Who are we to

her?” “let us give her some time. I am sure

she’ll agree to look for the truth.”  I agreed to

her as I felt the same.

we were soon fast asleep. Roarrr…… I

immediately woke up. Not because of the sound

but because priyanka woke me up. “what is it?” I

sleepily asked her. “did you hear that?” “heard

what?” it didn’t strike me at first as I had totally

forgotten about the sound. And I did not even

tell her about it. She stared at me. “oh! The

sound….don’t worry about that. The sound is

from the construction site. They are working late

at night.” she gave a sigh of relief. “shall we go out

and see if she has come?” I hesitated for two

things, one to leave the bed as I was too sleepy

and I know she would be there. But still, because

of some curiosity, I got up and followed her to

the balcony facing the entrance of our house. We

saw her standing there. This time she was there

for a longer time. “don’t you think that today she

has taken a lot of time standing there?” priyanka

whispered. “yes, but there is no use in standing

like this. What does she get standing like this?” “I

agree, we tried to help her. What else can we do?”

there was silence for fifteen minutes. “do you

think we should meet her tomorrow?” priyanka

asked. I was not interested, at least not at the

moment. “no, let’s give her some time. I am sure

she’ll come tomorrow.” “how can you be so sure.”

“she is taking a lot of time tonight. That makes it

clear that she is thinking about our suggestion.

And if you are done, can we please go back to

sleep. My eyes are burning.”
