My brother nearly pummeled me the minute I picked him up from the skate park the next day. And he wasn’t one to be affectionate.
“What the heck, Drew?”
“You’re taking me to the Bahamas, right?” His big blue eyes lit up with excitement.
“How…” I sputtered. “Did Mom tell you?”
Drew shook his dark hair into his face. I wasn’t sure if that was a “no” or if he just wanted to try a hair flip in front of his female classmates.
“Nah,” he finally answered. “Everyone just knows.”
As if on cue, a scantily clad blond girl Drew’s age leaned into the window of my car on Drew’s side.
“Hey, Drew!” She smiled. “Hi, Juliet! I’m Sarah.”
I had never met this girl in my life, and she knew my name. “Hi,” I managed.
“I heard you won the golden ticket from Justin Bieber!” Her smile stretched painfully huge across her face. “You’re so lucky. My friends and I have been trying like crazy to get it.”
“Oh, well…” I didn’t know how to respond. “My friend too.” I figured there was no need for me to explain the fact that I didn’t care much for Justin Bieber in the first place, considering I was surrounded by some eighth grade girls that my brother was trying to impress at the moment.
“I’ll see you around, Sarah,” Drew said with a Bieber-like head nod that he had been perfecting for the past few weeks.
I fought the urge to smack my forehead with my hand. Not my brother too! Who hasn’t been infected by the “Bieber Fever”?
With a wave to Sarah, I sped off around a few parked cars.
“So who was that?” I asked casually. “Your girlfriend?” I turned to Drew as I pulled to a stop at a red light.
He smirked haughtily. “One of them.”
I made a weird sound in the back of my throat and smacked the side of his head.
“What about your boyfriend?” he shot back. “How is Kyle? You makin’ sure he wears those helmets when he plays football?”
I glared at my brother. Okay, my boyfriend wasn’t the brightest bulb, but…
“It’s soccer season, smart one,” I replied. “But you wouldn’t know, would you? All you do is skate all year round with your stoner friends.”
He then proceeded to stick his tongue out at me like the mature fourteen-year-old he was. But he didn’t say anything else the rest of the way home.
Our mom was waiting in the kitchen when we got home, and so was Valerie, oddly enough.
Drew made a beeline for the refrigerator and shoveled random stuff into his mouth. I turned my gaze away in disgust and hopped onto a counter across from where my mom and Valerie were sitting. It wasn’t unusual for Val to be here on a Saturday, but it was weird that I wasn’t here when she was.
“What’s… up?” I asked hesitantly.
“Well, honey,” my mom began. “We talked just a little last night before you went to bed about, you know, the Bahamas and J-”
“Please don’t even say his name,” I pleaded. I had already heard/read ‘Justin Bieber’ too many times via phone, text, Twitter, Facebook, and everything else imaginable.
“I know you aren’t too enthusiastic about going, Juliet,” my mom continued.
“Which I think is freaking insane,” Drew hollered through a mouthful of whipped cream and Nutella.
