The world is black and white.
No changes, no emotion, no true reality.
The only touches of color in this world are from emotions.
With them, you feel forces stronger than gravity ripping apart from the inside.
Without them, you feel numb.
You know the feeling when you are around the one person you adore?
That's Love.
What about when you open the acceptance letter to your dream school?
That's Happiness.
How about when your best friend goes missing?
That's me. I am Heartbreak.
I can sense when I am needed before the time comes. People sense my aura and that is why they feel heartbreak. Some feel it stronger than others, some choose to ignore it, but no one is safe from it.
Today I sense that I am needed on a certain grassy hill. I look up to see that there are no clouds within view. Rain hasn't come in far too long, and there will be a drought if that doesn't change soon. Mountains surround the horizon in every direction, majestically looming over all entrapped within. No one is around yet, but they will be. Patience is required for my job. I find a nearby tree to climb and sit in while I wait. It doesn't take long for a young couple to pull up in a rusty old truck.
The girl has a blue bandana tied around her eyes. She has no clue where she is, yet she smiles so brilliantly that even a complete stranger could see how much she loves and trusts him. He gets out of the truck, walks to the other side, opens the door for her, then takes her hand and starts to guide her to the hillside.
"Xander, you know I don't like surprises! Just let me take off the blindfold."
"That would ruin all the fun Tina," he says with a smile. They stop at a point further down the hill from me.
"Three...two...one," he whispers as he takes the blindfold off. The sun is setting and it sends a golden hue across the whole valley, turning the mountains ahead into distant silhouettes. The warmth touches her skin and the sunshine claims her. She takes in a deep breath of fresh country air and looks over at Xander. The sparkle in her eyes shows her gratitude and love towards him. They don't need to say anything to each other. When two people are in love, they know exactly what the other is thinking. He puts his arm around her and lightly kisses her forehead.
They stay there watching the sun disappear, and the night come out. Sometime during the process, they moved into the back of the truck where Xander had many pillows and blankets. She loves the stars, and he loves seeing her happy.
"Did you know that a couple of years ago the Earth slightly shifted? It created another Zodiac sign, but nobody wanted to change their signs, so everyone agreed that it depends on what the sign was when you were born. Only people born after 2010 can have this new Zodiac," Tina says. He nods as she rambles, intently listening to every word.
"Out of curiosity, what's mine?" He questioned.
"Gemini," she replied without hesitation. Obviously she had thought of this before. "No one likes a Gemini, except me." They both look into the other's eyes, and let out a small laugh. I laugh a little too because as fate would have it, I'm also a Gemini.
They sit and point out constellations for hours. I myself am not a big fan of the stars, and got bored quickly. Tina fell asleep leaning against Xander's shoulder. He sits there, looking at the stars, wondering what he has done to deserve her. I think to myself, They obviously get along so well, so why am I here? Xander's phone buzzes. He quickly goes to silence it, as to not disturb her, but it was too late. Tina had woken up and seen his phone. One message. Four words. One emoji. I love you too❤️ She didn't wait for him to explain.
"Go. I see you never cared about me and now the feeling is mutual," she said, but in all reality, she cared more than anything. He was the only one who understood her completely and fully. There was no one she had to try and be while around him. She loved him so much. But not anymore.
He didn't say anything else. The pain he caused was irreversible and he knew it. Xander leaves, because staying would only make things worse. She stands there, holding back the tears until his rusty old truck is out of sight. Tears stream down her face, and all traces of a golden hue are now lost. Her heart is in a trillion pieces, and he took the main piece with him when he left. She felt as if she could never get that piece back. The sun couldn't come out tomorrow, nothing could ever be so happy and joyous ever again. She curls up in a ball, hugging her legs closer as if he were hugging back. The gears and cogs that run her emotions have just run out of oil and they have stopped turning.
This is the part of my job that I hate. Seeing the pain wiped across her face is enough to break my own heart. I quietly climb out of the tree, but not quiet enough.
"How could you do this to me?" Tina says. She now knows that I have been here the entire time.
"I don't get to choose who it happens to. Believe me, if I could, I would keep you safe," I say.
"Dad?" She pauses. "Does it ever get better?"
He tries to smile. "Of course dear. Time is the best medicine for a heartbreak."
Xander never had the nerve to come back. Tina's friends helped her more than anything. Without them, she still might be searching for the boy too scared to apologize. In my job, I have seen thousands of breakups. None have made me feel heartbreak, except for this one. It's probably because the stereotype Gemini is numb to emotion. That's me. An emotionless heartbreaker.
With emotions, you feel forces stronger than gravity ripping apart from the inside.
Without them, you feel numb.
