She lay, heart restless and eyes squeezed shut. Somehow a tear still made its way out. This isn't how she invisioned christmas eve to be. Her phone beeps and her eyes dart over to it. Heart momentarily rises with hope. She taps the screen. It's a promotional email.

Don't expect anything. She softly murmurs in her mind. She blinks back more tears. You don't need anyone anyway. You never had anyone celebrate christmas with you all those previous years. This year is simply no different.

The phone beeps again. She reaches over, but pulls back.

She looks at it and takes a deep breath. It's a Merry Christmas message. She looks at the clock, midnight exactly. She smiles but it's short lived. It's not from the man who had occupied her mind for the last three weeks. She types a Merry Christmas back. Happy that someone had taken the time to think of her. Even if it was a mass sent obligatory text.

You can make the first move. She assures herself. Just message something nonchelant so the conversation starts. She does.

5 minutes go by. Then 10, then 20, 30, 40. She constantly reopens the application. It's left unseen. A mosquito buzzes by her ear. She flicks both hands in annoyance. Maybe it's better I just go asleep.

As the narrator of this tale, I could no longer bare to live this reality. My reality.

A dream is always much kinder.

My phone beeps once more. This is the last I'll check it, I quietly announce.

It's from him.

His profile picture blinking on my screen. I hold back nervous giggles, I knew he would reply. I wonder what he said. Better late than never. I nod to myself.

"Im on my way to yours, I know you had something on in the evening so you couldnt come out. But I really want to start Christmas morning with you. I'll be there in 15 minutes."

And that's all I wanted and needed to make the rest of my year perfect.
