"Um...." I have no idea what to say. I can't tell Jen how I feel about Ricky, or she'll either freak out, hate me or both. But I don't know how he's gonna handle it if she asks him out.
"Ok, so like, what do you wanna do?" I ask nervously.
"I don't know, I just wanna find a way to tell him that I like him," she replies. "Do you think he's seeing anyone?"
Ok, now my heart really stops. "Maybe, I don't know," I mutter, trying not to blow my cover.
"I really hope he isn't," Jen says. "He probably isn't, since he, like, just arrived in the country."
"Yeah, probably not," I agree, smacking my forehead straight after doing so. What are you doing? I ask myself. You're just digging yourself further and further into this hole, and now you're not gonna be able to get out. Think Ellie, think.
"I still don't know what I should say," says Jen. "What do you think, El?"
"Hmmmm..." What am I supposed to tell her? "Maybe find a time when he's not with many people, and just...I don't know, tell him in the subtlest way possible."
"Gee thanks, that'll work perfectly," Jen says sarcastically.
"Well I haven't exactly had to do this before!" I remind her. "I don't know! Why are you even asking me of all people?"
"You know, I think you're right. I should've known you'd be no help. I'll go ask Sarah instead."
"No!" I nearly scream at her, but she hangs up before I can. Great. Just when I thought this situation couldn't get any worse.
...
I don't know what to do, but I have to at least tell Ricky. I find his name in Contacts, tap it and hold the phone up to my ear.
One ring.
Two rings.
Three rings.
"Come on, please pick up," I mutter. Luckily, he does.
"Hello?"
"Hi Ricky. I need to tell you something," I say as slowly and steadily as possible, but my heart is racing.
"Ok...what is it?" Ricky asks. Here goes.
"Ok, so, my friend says she really likes you," I begin. "She just called me and told me that. She was asking me for advice on how to tell you that."
"Yeah," Ricky says. "And?"
"I can't tell her about us. She'll go crazy. I told her I didn't know how to help her, and now she's gonna talk to Sarah about it. You know nothing can go right when she's involved." I take a deep breath, since I'm a little flustered having just said all that.
"Ok Ellie, calm down," Ricky says. "I know you don't wanna tell anyone about us yet. You don't have to. We're gonna work something out: we'll stop Sarah from getting involved, and Jen won't know about us. We can do it, I know we can. Okay?"
I nod, then realise he can't see me. "Okay," I respond. "I just hope you're right." I bite my lip anxiously.
"Don't worry about it," he assures me. "I'll help you. We still have a few days before we go back to school, so we can figure something out. Your friend doesn't have Sarah's number, does she?"
"No," I reply. "Thankfully."
"Ok good," Ricky says. "I'll see you at school, then."
"Bye." I hang up. I have no idea how this is gonna work out. The best I can do is hope that Ricky knows what he's doing.
