I walk into the kitchen and open the fridge,  grabbing an apple before sitting down at the kitchen table and grabbing a pen from the cup in the middle of the table. I take my homework from my backpack on the chair besides me and begin to work on it when my eyes linger to the basement door.

It is wooden with a metal frame and a few scratches in the polished auburn colored wood. The doorknob is bronze without a lock. Above it is a silver keypad with a thin screen and gray buttons. Above the screen is two lights, the red one glowing while the green is dull. Above the padlock is a chain lock. My father never told me what's behind the door, but for it to have a padlock it must be intense.

Suddenly the padlock light glowed green and then the door opened, letting light flow into the kitchen before my father closed the door. I jerked my eyes away from the door as my father did something with the lock. He slamms his fist into the door and lets out a grunt. "You were staring again Jace." He says suddenly.

"No." I shake my head,  staring at the apple in my hand and take a bite. "I'm doing my homework." I know lying is no use, but I could try.

"Please, Jace, do not lie." He pulls out the chair next to mine and sets my backpack on the floor. "Jace. I have to trust you. Do not, I repeat, do not try to step through that door. The consequences will be all around unbearable. Do you understand?"

"You tell me this everyday dad, I know! I can't get in,  anyway, you lock the door and haven't told anyone the code."

"This is different."

"How? It's the same conversation we have everyday when I even glance at the door! I am a little sick of hearing it over and over again."

"The padlock is broke, Jace. Don't touch that door."
