I didn't even dare to breathe.
Zara immediately took a step away from Zero, whom was looking anywhere but me. "It's not what you think it is." She blurted, before quickly adding, "Not that I care what you think..."
"He's the reason why you were in a bad mood, and if I hadn't interjected you would've secretly beat the crap out of him here?" I guessed, and the shocked look on Zero's face confirmed that I hit the nail perfectly.
"Curse you and your stupid smart brain." Zara hissed under her breath, running a hand through her newly cut shoulder-length hair.
"Well, thanks for saving my life." Zero muttered towards me, before quickly adding, "Not that I needed saving..."
"Right." I said, holding back an incredulous laugh. It's funny how these two were so similar, but arch enemies. "But not to fast." I walked up to him with a threatening glare. "Why is Zara mad at you? What did you do to her?!"
"Woah woah, step away from the brainless head." Zara warned, grabbing my arm to hold me back. "This fight is mine. I haven't beaten up someone in ages."
I furrowed my brows. "You punched a boy who accidentally stepped on your new heels just yesterday."
She shot me a sad look, cracking her knuckles as she said, "Exactly. It's been too long."
I shook my head at her, before turning my focus back on Zero.
He laughed mirthlessly. "When is Zara ever not mad at me? She still holds a grudge on me for eating the last ice block in first grade!"
"You could've been a gentleman for once and given it to me, asshole." She spat at him.
"Um, unfortunately, being a gentleman can only be applied for ladies." He retorted. "Besides, not my fault your chubby legs couldn't outrun—"
"Why you little—" The next thing we knew, Zara's hands were wrapped around his neck, choking him furiously.
"Zara, please stop!" I tried to say as kindly as possibly, not trying to get myself choked too. She was quite a violent person, to state the obvious. To my horror, Zero's face started to go purple, but he kept on smirking like a little Devil.
"I hope you kill me and go to jail for a lifetime, Zara Aldi." He spluttered, his smirk widening.
Okay this was getting out of hand. Fearlessly, I grabbed her arm, trying to pull her away. She was quite heavy for a second, and then suddenly pulling her away felt like pulling away a feather. What the heck? Where did these muscles come from? I complimented myself.
Turned out, there weren't my muscles. They were Stefan's. Out of nowhere, he materialised and pulled her away from Zero by her waist. My eyes lingered on his hands on her waist, and for some odd reason, it made me feel strange. Not the good kind of strange. Much to my relief, he removed his hands as soon as he dragged her away a good few metres from Zero, whom was now gasping and coughing hysterically.
I didn't miss Stefan and Zara sharing a look, before he walked over to Zero. How the heck did they know each other?! I decided I was going to get the answer out of Stefan. He was an easier target.
