"WAIT!!" I screamed as the black and yellow cab sped past me.
The taxi screeched to a halt as I finally caught up to it.
"Thank you," I said to the driver.
"The fee is $3, pay up or get out," he huffed.
What was his problem? I pulled out the last few dollars that I had and handed them to him.
"They're wet..." he said dangling the bills like they were someone's dirty underwear.
"Yeah... it's raining... it's kind of difficult to keep things from not getting wet."
"Well. next time they better be dry."
"With that attitude, there won't be a next time," I retorted.
The driver rolled his eyes and then stepped on the gas pedal.
"That's a beautiful ring you've got there..." a nearly haunting voice whispered.
I jerked my head to the right, startled.
There was a man sitting there. His black fedora was shadowing his face, so I couldn't quite make out what he looked like. He had on a long beige trench coat.
Was he there before? I don't think I noticed him when I boarded the taxi.
I tried to settle myself down and replied, "Oh, why thank you. My grandmother gave it to me when I younger."
The man picked up my hand and examined my ring. "Real silver?"
I nodded precariously. "Yes... it's real."
"How much is it?"
Excuse me? Did this creepy guy just ask me how much my ring was worth? What is up with this guy?
"Um, I'm not selling this. Sorry, it means too much. I couldn't bare to give it away."
The man cocked his head to the side and raised an eyebrow. "I'll give you ten thousand dollars for it."
What part of: I am not selling my ring did he not understand?! This was not a negotiation! "No, I'm not selling this. Not even for all the money in the world."
The man nodded, understanding how much the ring meant to me.
"Oh, hey, it seems as though the rain stopped," the driver commented.
"Yay! Now you won't have to worry about wet money anymore," I replied sarcastically.
The driver turned and scowled at me.
I began to take my coat off. I wouldn't be needing it anymore if it wasn't raining.
"Let me help you," the man said, holding the sleeve as I slipped it off.
I smiled, thanking him.
"You can stop here. I can walk to where I'm going from this spot," the man told the driver. "It was a pleasure meeting you ma'am," he turned to me and said as he got out.
"Um, you too," I waved as he left.
A few minutes later, still in the taxi, I began trying to chip some of the dark red nail polish off of my nails, when I noticed that my ring was gone, and, there, sitting beside me, was a wad of one hundred dollar bills.
