"So what did you think of the hamburger?" Maria, Denki's girlfriend, asked with a giggle as the walked through the empty streets of DC. "Did you like it?"
Denki quickly shook his head, shivering at the thought of eating another tasteless meat patty. He smiled and wrapped an arm around Maria's shoulders as Fall leaves swirled around them.
Maria giggled in an adorable way, causing Denki's heart to leap, and leaned closer to his chest. "It's actually cow meat," she told him, but paused. "Well, it's sort of cow meat. It's mostly all the stuff they can't sell."
Denki's eyes widened. "People buy that?!" he exclaimed in disbelief.
Maria laughed at his reaction.
As they walked down the sidewalk of the busy street, Denki slipped his hand in his pocket and felt the soft velvet of the small box containing a ring. He bit his lip as a nervous trail of sweat trickled down the side of his head.
Today he was going to propose to her.
His eyes darted across the colorful street signs and store fronts—none, of course, that he could read—and his eyes rested on the entrance to a green park. Silently crossing his fingers, he pointed to the grassy area. "Why don't we go over there?" he suggested, trying to sound as inconspicuous as possible.
Maria smiled and nodded in an adorable fashion that made Denki's heart flutter.
Gosh, she was beautiful.
Gosh, he was nervous.
He gripped her small hand in his and led her to explore the beautiful park.
Maria giggled and wrapped her arms around his waist, causing him to blush slightly.
She was really happy.
She was in a really good mood.
She was really likely to say yes.
Denki quickly led them to a white painted bridge spanning over a crystal river. Orange rays bounced off the bubbling water as it trickled off the white rocks.
It was the perfect setting.
Maria smiled and drew in a deep breath. "This is beautiful," she told him.
Denki nodded as his hand slipped into his pocket once more. "It is," he agreed, "just like you."
Maria blushed deeply and tucked an auburn strand of hair behind her ear.
"Maria," Denki began, rubbing the velvet cover of the box within his pocket, "you're probably the prettiest girl I've ever met. You're smart and sweet and you...you save my life more than once," his fingers clamped around the box and he stepped back. "I've thought long and hard about this." He got down on one knee and pulled the box open to reveal a sparkling sapphire ring. "Maria," he asked, "will you marry me?"
Maria gasped and lunged forward to wrap her arms around his neck as happy tears sprang into her eyes. "Yes!" she answered. "Yes yes yes!"
Denki let out a sigh of relief and returned her embrace.
"Yes of course I will marry you," Maria repeated, pulling away to look him in the eyes. "I love you so much. You're my perfect little dork."
Denki blushed and grinned back.
He was in love.
He was engaged.
Life was perfect.
...hehe until I turn it upside down
