Chapter 2

Kamal was uneasy.

After 3 days stuck in a hut playing nursemaid to the 19 year old John he had finally been allowed some outside time. However he’d only been able to see Rob at meal times and then the red head ‘Will’ was stuck to his side, like a fly to honey. It amused him the obvious tactics of the group in trying to keep Rob and him separated.

He’d also spent the past week fending off the less then obvious prying of the group’s doctor, Alan. Everything from his botanical knowledge to his opinions about the federation had been slyly sought after even while discussing something as innocuous as the weather. He had to give the man an ‘A’ for effort, he would have made a brilliant spy.

Speaking of the weather it had gone back to a steady downpour. This he thought was downright depressing. Next time he was off world he wanted to be on a dry, hot desert planet. And yet the weather seemed to have an opposite effect on the rebel group in fact he would consider them cheerfully chirpy.

By the time a week had passed Kamal got his first chance to speak to Rob in relative privacy. Alan, the doctor had allowed him more freedom within the camp certainly more than Rob was experiencing. As long as he made no moves towards the edge of camp or to the main building, one of only a couple on the forest floor, he was allowed to come and go. As the doctor had pointed out it would be foolhardy to try to run for the settlement on one’s own after the amount of rain they had had in the past week or two. He’d then shrugged and said, “We’d probably find you before you drowned or died of exposure but I really don’t feel like looking after more sick people if I can help it.”

Well it was nice to know he cared. Sort of.

Rob was sitting at the base of the tree pretending to sleep when Kamal came up, seating himself beside him.

“Ahh this is the life.” He commented to the drowsy eyed Rob.

“Isn’t it just.” The equally sarcastic reply.

“No really. No work, no responsibilities, a roof over our heads, food we don’t have to buy or earn, sort of almost decent company, it’s the life all right.”

Rob smiled slightly, “Bored?”

“Out of my ever loving mind.” Kamal laid his head back on the tree beside Rob taking a bite out of a mushy fruit, tasty but foul smelling. “Talking about company, where’s your jailor? I thought he never left your side?”

“Meeting.”

“Hmm, so who’s watching you?”

“Aiden.” Rob turned his head slightly towards the young man about 20 metres away currently goofing around with his companions.

“Huh.” Kamal snorted slightly. “I see you’re seen as a huge danger then.”

“Ah huh I’m a kitten, don’t cha know?”

“Yeah if kitten’s where 6’3” and built like a Destroyer.” Kamal scoffed at him, a Destroyer being known for its speed, stealth and deadly weaponry.

“Nah I’ve been as innocent and as dull as can be. I swear he wants me to do something if only to jump me and get it over with.”

Kamal snorted, “Yeah I noticed that.”

Rob tensed, “Meaning?”

“Hell man I have eyes, the man watches you whenever you twitch. He either wants to bang you or break you, maybe both. I hope for your sake it’s the former.”
