It was 04:00 am. Katherine‘s parents were sleeping in their bedroom. Kara and Derek, Katherine‘s siblings were both asleep in their parents‘ bedroom as well. Katherine‘s twin, Joe on the other hand, was not home. She was sleeping over at her friend‘s house. Katherine woke up and started reading her Sherlock Holmes book. She didn‘t understand why, but for some reason she just couldn‘t sleep.

There was a knock at the door. It was weird since it was so early in the morning. Katherine stood up and walked downstairs. She felt a chill come over her. It was cold in the house. She opened the door and was shocked when she saw two guys. The first one looked like he was about 30 years old. He had gray eyes and black hair. He had a short brown beard and a silver gun pointed at Katherine. The other one had blue eyes and gray, shoulder length hair. He looked older, around midsixties and he had two long, very sharp daggers with blue handles. The first one spoke.

“Let us inside and you just might live.” Katherine was really scared but decided that if she wouldn’t let them in, they would just kill her and go in anyway. She put her hands in the air to show them that she was unarmed.

“Don‘t shoot me, I‘ll let you in“ she said as she opened the door and showed them the way upstairs. She walked first, the gun touching her back. She looked around in search of a way out of this. She led them to the kitchen when she saw her dad‘s sword, he had bought it a week ago and had been sharpening it in the kitchen. Thank you dad she thought to herself. She was stressed out. She couldn‘t jump for the sword right now, he would simply shoot her in the back.

“Do it.” the younger man said to the other one. Katherine heard the older man walk away from them, checking into the other rooms of the apartment Katherine guessed. She kept waiting for her chance to grab the sword, didn‘t take her eye of it.

Good morning! Good morning!” It was Katherine‘s parrot. The man with the gun turned around, shocked. Katherine took the chance and grabbed the sword. The man turned around when he heard her and Katherine cut off his hand. He screamed in pain as his hand and gun fell to the ground. Terrified, she picked up the gun. While she was crouching down to pick it up, the handless man kicked her hard in the face. She fell backwards in pain but got the gun. She stood up quickly and shot him in the chest. His eyes opened wide as the light went out of them and his lifeless body fell to the ground. Katherine was so scared and she looked around for the older man. He wasn‘t there. She had the gun in her right hand and the sword in her left, grateful that her dad had taught her to shoot with one hand a couple of years ago. She quietly walked straight into her parents‘ bedroom, just in time to see the old man cut her mother‘s throat. It was quick. No screaming, no pain. There was blood everywhere, her parents‘ were both dead, her ten year old sister still coughing blood and her three year old brother was laying in his bed, his eyes closed. Katherine wasn‘t sure whether or not he was still alive. Without hesitating, Katherine shot the old man in the leg. He screamed. Katherine threw her gun to the floor and jumped at the man, with the sword in hand, let out a loud battlecry and cut off his head. She dropped the sword and looked at her family.

Her sister was still coughing blood, but it was obvious that she didn‘t have a lot of time left. Katherine ran to her.

“Kara! Kara, it’s going to be alright. Look at me, stay with me“ her voice was cracking but she didn‘t cry. She had to be strong for her sister. Kara looked at her and Katherine did her best to smile.

“Katherine...“ Kara whispered, using her last breathes as she coughed. Tears formed in her eyes and started falling down her cheeks. “I‘m scared...I don‘t want to die. Will...will you just hold my hand?“ Katherine held her hand. She was on the edge of breaking down, but she kept strong for her sister. “I stole some of mommy’s chocolate yesterday… What if…what if I don’t go to a better place?“ She was crying now, but Katherine could barely hear her crying over all the coughing. She had only seconds left, and still she didn‘t cry loudly, like a normal ten year old. She just cried softly as she coughed.

“Kara...Kara, it‘s going to be alright. Don't be silly, of course you are going to a better place.” Katherine forced a smile ”Kara, I...I love you. Just...remember that. I love you so much. You‘re my little star.“ Katherine said, tears forming behind her eyes. Kara stopped coughing and her head fell to the side. Katherine closed Kara‘s eyes. She didn‘t cry. She didn‘t have time to cry.

She stood up and walked over to her brother. Uncertain of whether or not he was still alive she lifted up the sheets. There was blood all over his chest, coming for a stab wound through the heart. Katherine dropped the sheet, put her hand up to her mouth and backed away, slowly. This was too much to take in all at once. Katherine couldn‘t really wrap her brain around what just happened. She picked up her weapons and left the room. Before she closed the door she looked back. For a couple of seconds, she just stood there and watched her family. Her dead family. She closed the door and turned away. A single tear escaped her right eye. She quickly wiped it and walked downstairs to tell her cousin Jeff and her grandparents what happened. She didn‘t really understand it herself...Why did these men come here? Why did they want to do this? And why didn‘t they just kill me by the door as soon as I opened it?

She arrived at her grandparents door. She opened it quietly in case they weren‘t alone either. The first thing she saw was her grandmother bashing in a man‘s head with a large cookie jar. She looked upset, she was crying while hitting him in the head with the jar over and over again. The man was lying on the floor and her grandmother, Eleanor was sitting over him, attacking again and again. The man wasn‘t dead yet, and Katherine suspected that it wasn‘t her grandmother‘s plan to put him out of his misery that easily. He had already lost an eye and a couple of teeth and his head was bloody. Katherine decided that enough was enough and so she shot him in the head. Eleanor dropped the jar and fell to the ground, sobbing and screaming. Before walking over to her grandmother, Katherine checked the apartment for other assassins. She found three more, but they had all been brutally killed by Eleanor.

She also found her grandfather, Morty and her cousin, Jeff. Jeff had been adopted by Eleanor and Morty at the age of four and was the same age as Joe and Katherine. The three of them had been best friends ever since he joined the family. When Katherine saw his body she put her hand up to her mouth and gasped. She hurried out of the room and walked to her grandma who was still crying. For a while they just sat there and hugged each other without saying a word, but Katherine had to talk.

“Grandma…mom and dad are dead upstairs. They were killed by some man. I killed him and one other man, but not until they had already killed Derek and Kara.” The tears were dropping now, one by one. She wiped them  from her face. “Joe isn’t home, so I hope that she’s still alive, unless these people also sent someone for her.“ Eleanor wiped her eyes as well and looked into Katherine‘s eyes.

“You killed?“ Eleanor started crying again. “Oh, my sweet child. It’s going to be okay. We’re both still here and alive, and we have no reason to believe that Joe isn’t out there somewhere, sound asleep” They hugged for a little while longer.

Suddenly the door was kicked open. It was another one of these assassins. He came running in with his gun and he shot Eleanor. Her body fell down. Katherine cried out as she picked up her gun and aimed at the man‘s head. Neither of them shot, they just pointed their guns at each other. On the verge of crying, Katherine slowly asked.

“Why are you doing this? What have we ever done to you? Who is behind all of this?“ She had tears in her eyes but she kept her voice down, her anger obvious. The man grinned.

“The Boss doesn’t want you to know. Yet.” He looked at Katherine’s gun. “Even if you kill me, there will just be more. You can’t fight us all. We will be coming for you. The Boss will finish his mission.” He continued.

“What mission?“ Katherine demanded.

“We wouldn’t want to spoil the fun now, would we?” The man said. Katherine just wanted to get this over with.

“Enough of this” She said. She forced out a polite smile. “It was nice meeting you” she said as she pulled the trigger.
