DISCLAIMER: This is my first time writing fan fiction--which I'm sure you hear all the time HA! I used to love writing and haven't in a few years. I stumbled across wattpad and decided I'd give it a try.I can't give any promise to the accuracy of my writing, I've just taken characters and created my own story from them. I hope you all enjoy!
"So why'd you call us here Fury?" questioned Natasha as all the Avengers filed into the meeting lounge and found their regular seats.
"Yeah, I mean I love a reunion but you do realize I'm the head of Stark Industries don't you? I've got a little more on my plate than you simple superheroes," Tony said with a smirk, he added a wink just so everyone knew that he was sort of joking.
"Yes your highness, I'll try and make this quick," Nick Fury rolled his eye. He had summoned his team of oddball heroes for a time-sensitive matter, so he was indeed going to make his explanation efficient, but not for the sake of the arrogant ass-hole sitting to his right. "Let's get right to it," Fury proceeded to pull out his tablet, casting a folder of images and videos into the air between himself and the onlookers. He selected a particular video that he knew would be impactful and sat back as the group took in the pixelated recording playing before them.
--On the screen is the wrinkled face of a Nun, her eyes are sinister as she asks, "Do you want it 'live, or do ya want me to sedate it for ya? Costs extra for sedation, but most people go that way," She spat the word 'It' with such hate, it was as if she was speaking of an insect that needed squashing immediately.
"I'll take her alive," replied a deep voice, strikingly familiar.
"Your funeral," croaks the old woman.
"Not an issue, here you go." The camera casts down to view two hands exchanging money. One large brown hand passing a fistful of cash into the frail, knobbly hands of the Nun.
"You'll find your pleasure down those stairs, be sure to bolt the door behind yourself; and there's no fault but your own if...," the woman paused, choosing her words carefully, "...you don't make it out as you went in."
The camera begins moving, swaying back and forth as it's owner made his way down the dark, steep staircase arriving at a sturdy wooden door which was heavily bolted shut. The videographer steadily undid the bolt and slowly pushed, the hinges whining a complaint as the heavy door swung open.
The operator of the camera entered a dark room, it looked left to see a chain attached to the wall, leading away into the darkness.
"You can come out," said the voice, which everyone had come to realize belonged to the one displaying the tape in the first place--Nick Fury. "I've brought you something," he continued, holding out a candy bar.
The chain began to rustle, as something moved closer, but as the chain approached it began to curve upwards--whatever was approaching was moving across the ceiling. --
"What the hell is this Fury?" asked Bruce warily. He inhaled sharply as a small figure appeared from the top of the projection.
--A small face was in view eye to eye with 'camera Fury' but wrong side up. One eye was swollen closed, in fact the little being's entire face was swollen beyond recognition, but it looked to be a child of 4 or 5 years old. Recognition sparked in the visible eye, and a hand reached down which Fury slid an opened chocolate bar into. --
Fury paused the video and turned to the Avengers, waiting for a response.
"What in the world did we just watch? And what were you doing there?" Steve questioned.
"I have an unusual mission for you. This little girl's name is Callie, and she was submitted to foster care at 2 years old. Due to her... unique manner, she was unsuited to many homes and her social worker--corrupt as he was--took payout from that haggard woman you saw at the beginning of the recording, she bought this child and began selling her to whoever would pay. Your mission is to rescue this child, bring her back here until we can figure out what to do with her."
The room was quiet for a moment while everyone pondered this new mission.
Tony had yet to look at Fury, he was still leaning forward in his chair with his hand resting over his mouth, fixated on the swollen little face on the projection. Finally, sitting back and crossing his arms he turned to Nick, "No one is going to want this child, no one with normal intentions at least. I'll adopt her."
"You Tony?" Steve asked, incredulous.
"Okay, WE," Tony retorted, rolling his eyes, "But yeah me, I won't have a kid of my own... The life we live is too dangerous, I won't do it, but..." he paused contemplating his wording, "But this kid's life couldn't get any worse. I think we could give her a home, a good one. And hell, I need someone to inherit Stark Industries."
"I don't know Tony..." Started Natasha.
"Let's play that by ear okay Tony?" interrupted Fury, "I like the idea, in fact, it will likely be the only option, but let's start by getting her out of there. Tony I want you to head this mission, you'll go and retrieve the girl; Bruce, you'll accompany him, she will likely need medical attention." He waits for Bruce and Tony to nod their consent, "The rest of you will have the jet ready for Stark and Banner to bring the girl back to."
"Alright let's do this." Stark stands, and the others follow suit.
