I just had the heart attack of my life. I knew it! Amber has wings! I knew there was just something about her. This however, was way to bizarre. She won't even tell me what happened to her. She says it's a long story, and she doesn't have the time to explain. So she made us swear not to tell, and then we all walked out of the lunch room together. I was still stunned, and I'm pretty sure Jack noticed when we ran into him as we turned the corner.
" You guys good?" he asks us. I jump a mile. Everything seems louder. Is it supposed to seem louder? I didn't think so, but whatever. I guess I'm still shocked.
" Yeah, we're fine. Just getting out of the crowded lunchroom." I tugged on my collar. I really didn't want to tell him anything, because I had literally just swore to secrecy. Talk about a stressful situation.
" What's up with Amber?" Jack asks. Amber flinches. Zach grabs her hand, and she bites him. Hard. Amber turns strawberry red, and Zach releases her so he can suck on his his hand.
While that was happening, I went back into the lunch room and grabbed some popcorn. This was gonna be long and entertaining. I came back before anyone noticed, and when Zach noticed I had popcorn, he gave me the death glare. Okay, so now was not the time. Jeez.
Amber and Jack are staring at each other, with glares of pure hate. No joke.
" I should go now," Amber whispers to me. I nod. She tugs on my sleeve.
" Come with me." She begs. I turn to look at her. She looks terrified.
" Okay," I say, hurrying off to catch up with her because by now, she's already speed walking to a nearby maintenance closet. Once we're inside Amber slumps to the floor.
" Amber, what's wrong?" I ask gently. She shakes her head.
" They'll be able to find me now. I can't stay here." Amber's voice is so quiet, I can hardly hear her.
" Who are "They?" I ask her. She just shakes her head. Her blue gray eyes fill with tears.
" Do me a favor. Meet me in the woods. In the clearing. Make sure you're not followed." Amber whispers. I nod. She gets up and leaves the closet, leaving me confused.
For the rest of the day, I think about what Amber said. What was she? I hoped she would explain to me what happened to her when I got to our meeting place. As soon as class let out, I rushed to my locker. Amber had already disappeared. I grab my things and turn to walk down the hallway. I spin on my heel and come face to face with Zach.
" Oh, Jeez!" I cry out in surprise.
" Where are you going?" He asks me. I open my mouth to tell him, but then snap it shut again, remembering what Amber told me.
" Just to the library to think." I tell him.
" The library is that way." Zach points behind me.
" I'm going to the public library." I insist. Zach shrugs and turns to walk away.
" Oh, and, Corbyn?" He turns to face me again.
" Yeah?" I answer.
" Tell Amber I'm not mad at her for biting me." he says, and then walks out the door.
Hours later, I'm standing where Amber told me to wait.
" You're late." Came Amber's sharply accented voice.
" I ran into Zach." I admit. I look around me, wondering where her voice is coming from.
Suddenly, she drops out of the tree behind me.
" Sorry if I scared you earlier." She apologizes.
" That's okay. I just want to know what happened to you." I say.
" You really want to hear my horror story?" Amber asks, as if she wasn't sure I actually cared.
" Yes. What happened?" I ask.
" My parents sold me to a lab where they were doing experiments on humans. The scientists wanted to sell me. They grafted my DNA with owl DNA, and it gave me the ability to fly. It changed my bone structure and made my heart and lungs bigger. I was exposed to chemicals that make my eyes change color. I can sense fear and I can run faster and jump higher than any normal human can. When I fly, my wings make no noise. That's all I remember." Amber confesses.
" Whoa. I'm so sorry. But isn't it great to be able to fly?" I ask. Amber laughs.
" Yes, it's the most amazing feeling ever. But I'm being hunted because of it." She admits. We're silent for a moment.
" Take my hand." Amber orders suddenly. She takes off her sweatshirt and spreads her wings.
" Are you sure you can carry both of us?" I ask.
" I've done it before. I saved a seven year old girl from a plane crash once." Amber says. She grabs my hand and jumps up into the air.
" Hold on!" She shouts. I tighten my grip on her hand. For a girl with hollow bones, she was really strong. Up, up, up we went until we almost touched the clouds.
" You might want to hang onto my waist. This will be a bumpy ride." Amber shouts down to me. I do as I'm told because I didn't want to fall to my death.
" This is amazing!" I shout. For the first time, I see Amber smile. Like a real, happy smile.
" Ready?" She asks.
" For what?" I reply.
" This!" Amber shots upward and then stops flapping. She presses her wings to her back. We start to fall.
" Amber! What are you doing!" I scream frantically. The ground was getting closer.
All of a sudden she snaps her wings out and flaps until we touch the ground with a small thud.
" That was totally amazing!" I'm so excited, I'm almost shouting. Amber is breathing hard and smiling. She reaches up and takes out her braid, shaking her wavy gold hair out.
" Did you have fun?" She asks me. I nod enthusiastically.
" Good. I think I can trust you." She shows me her perfect teeth. I smile back. I had made a new friend.
