Moonlight Ambush

I gently crawled through the green leaves, looking for Gantetsu. He could be anywhere right now, considering he was a ninja. Before I could react, a kick came flying from one of the trees. I barely reacted in time, blocking it. I jumped off the branch and landed on the dirt. Gantetsu came flying out behind me.

"So you came," I said, smiling slightly.

"You seem like a worthy opponent. I would like to see what you can do," he whispered back.

"I do hope you're ready then."

This time, we had brought real weapons. I had brought katanas as well as knives to counter the ninja's attacks. He was strong but lithe, just like me. I wondered how we would get a winner out of this competition. Striking again and again, the blades clanged as they clashed. As the moon rose and sunk, there was still no clear sign of a winner.

As the moon died and dawn approached, Gantetsu and I leaned against a cherry blossom tree, tired of the fighting. I looked at him carefully beside me, and he didn't seem injured at all. "What are your secrets!" I finally burst out.

"Mastering the body and the mind," he replied.

"Well, of course, that's what the teach in both the Sangria and Kage Sects!"

"You may have heard that I use magic with might. I assure you, that is true."

"If it is, why didn't you use it against me?"

He looked at me carefully, as if he didn't want to kill me. I could see him trying to feel the bond between us. I, too, was confused. Were we friends? Rivals? Just students? I couldn't seem to find who I was when I was around him.

"Get up, class starts in a few hours," Gantetsu said, and started walking away. I didn't want him to go, silly as that sounds. A few more hours with hime would be nice. What did he make me become?
