An endoscope uses two fiber optic lines. A "light fiber" carries light into the body cavity along with an "image fiber" carries the style on the body cavity back to the physician's viewing lens. Additionally there is a separate port to allow for administration of medication, suction, and irrigation. This port may also be used introducing small folding instruments such as forceps, scissors, brushes, snares and baskets for tissue excision (removal), sampling, or any other diagnostic and therapeutic work. Endoscopes can also be used along side a camera or video recorder to document images of within the joint or chronicle an endoscopic procedure. New endoscopes have digital capabilities for manipulating and enhancing the video images.

Why Is Endoscopy Performed?

Endoscopy could be used to diagnose various conditions by close study of internal organ and the body structures. Endoscopy may guide therapy and repair, just like the eliminating torn cartilage in the bearing surfaces of a joint. Biopsy (tissue sampling for pathologic testing) may also be performed under endoscopic guidance. Local or general anesthetic works extremely well during endoscopy, based upon the type of procedure being performed.

Internal abnormalities revealed through endoscopy include: abscesses, biliary (liver) cirrhosis, bleeding, bronchitis, cancer, cysts, degenerative disease, gallbladder stones, hernia, inflammation, metastatic cancer, polyps, tumors, ulcers, and also other diseases and scenarios.

Endoscopy can be a non-invasive procedure and carries from it certain minor risks based on the sort of procedure being performed. However, these risks are usually far outweighed by the diagnostic and therapeutic potential on the procedure.

Before the widespread using endoscopy and diagnostic imaging, most internal conditions could basically be diagnosed or cured with open surgery. Until the last several decades, exploratory surgery was routinely performed not until someone was critically ill plus the way to obtain illness isn't known. For example, using some dire cases, the patient's thorax or abdomen were surgically opened and examined to attempt to determine the source of illness.

Endoscopy is often done on an outpatient basis. "Outpatient" means that the task doesn't have hospital admission and acute care and observation and may even be exercised away from premises on the hospital. Outpatient procedures performed at hospitals or ambulatory centers encourage the patient to visit home or get back to work in a little bit after their procedure.
