Why Me?

Chapter 21

This chapter is dedicated to my little brother, nnll14, for coming up with the idea for Jerry and Miranda getting together.  I am grateful to him for that, even though most of the time I just complain about him ;P

Luke:

            Sophia was staring at them with a stunned expression as well.

            “Hey guys, what’s going on?” Noor asked, bouncing down the stairs. She saw her dad and my mom just as they were breaking apart from their hug.

            “Oh my gosh. Is that- Is your-”  She stopped and just stared at her dad for awhile.

            “Yup. Kids, this is Miranda. And I am assuming this is her son, Jake? No, it was...”

            “Luke?” Sophia supplied.

            “Yes, Luke! Wait, how did you know?”  He looked suspiciously at Sophia. Mom also looked at her.

            “Oh! You’re the girl who came to our house! I had no idea...” Miranda said, looking at me.

            “What? I never went to your house,” Sophia said confused.

            “That was me,” Noor mumbled, coming down to stand next to Sophia. Mom looked between the two confusedly, then turned to Noor and Sophia’s dad.

            “You never told me you had twins!” she accused.

            “Sorry, it must have slipped my mind. You guys are friends?”

            “Yeah,” Sophia said. She looked like she was going to say something else, but she decided not to.

            “Well, Luke, I'm Jerry. And these are my kids...wait, you already know them. Nevermind,” Jerry said, and Mom giggled. Jerry led us to the living room and we made ourselves comfortable.

            “So guys, I was telling you how we were thinking of getting serious...and I just wanted to ask you first. What do you think?” He had his arm around Moms shoulders and Mom was leaning her head on his shoulder. It was kind of weird to see my mom with a guy, but she looked happy so I didn't care.

            “Yes, that’s a great idea!” Noor shouted suddenly, causing Miranda to jump a little. Jerry looked like he was used to it. “You could marry, and then Luke can be our brother!” She grinned at me, and Sophia started laughing, noticing the irony in the situation. Jerry and Mom looked confused.

            “I thought you liked her?” Mom said, gesturing with her head to Noor. I groaned, and dropped my head into my hands. Sophia started snickering as Noor looked shocked.

            “What?!? Not you too!” Noor exclaimed, looking panicked.

            “No! No, I don't like her like THAT. I like her as a sister!” I said, wishing I could disappear into the ground.

            “Okay, tha'ts good. Because you are going to become real brothers and sisters soon! Isn’t it exciting!” Jerry said, still looking slightly confused, but not asking us to elaborate.

            “Yup!” Noor said. The three of us shared a look, knowing we were already brothers and sisters and nothing special was really happening. Well, now I would be around Noor and Sophia all the time. But that was good. Now I could protect them from Drake better.

            “Anyways.. I..um...” Jerry looked awkwardly embarrassed. Then he cleared his throat and stood up.

            “I am going to do this the right way,” he announced, getting down on one knee in front of Miranda where she was sitting on the couch. Mom looked like she was about to faint.
