Everyone has a red string tied on their little fingers the moment they are born. The red strings are incorporeal. It cannot be touched. It can only be seen by the people who own them. Nobody knows exactly where it came from or how it forms. Some says it’s from the gods. Some claims it’s from the universe itself. But one thing is for sure, some one is waiting on the other end of the string. That person is their soulmate, someone fated to be with them. The red string connects two people who are meant to be together. No matter what the circumstances, they will be drawn to one another...

Kieran Lopez absentmindedly taps his fingers on his desk watching the red strings moving freely around him. He is one of the rare few, one in a billion, who has the unique ability to see other peoples Strings.

According to research and from his personal observations, each property of the strings has a meaning. Loose treads means that they haven’t meet their soulmate. It’s very common to meet your soulmate in the late teenage years according to statistics. The strings are too loose to give a very distinct direction because sometimes it’s floating happily through the air or lying on the ground like goose-chased trail. This leads to the ‘Search’ wherein people actively search for that someone at the end of their strings. But mostly people leave it to destiny to pave the way for them to meet.

Some of them are pulled tight like bowstring. The strings straightens and becomes tout when they their soulmate. It may be because they see them, or accidentally bump into each other or sometimes when they are very close. And when they finally touch, the strings glows bright then fades back to normal.

Least common are white strings, which signify death of their soulmate before they even meet. It’s tragic but they learn to move one and seek out those people with white strings. Kieran always feels a pang of sorrow every time he sees one of them. Of course, despite the strings people fall in love with someone else who are not connected to them and live just as happily. True love is a powerful thing. It can overpower the very universe. He has seen it happen with his very eyes. People who aren’t connected but as happy as connected ones.

Someone taps his shoulders and he turned to see who it was. It was Wendy, his bestfriend, one of the few people who knew about his ability. Kieran keeps quiet about his ability because people like him are most often than not are forcefully roped into searching other people’s soulmate.

“Kieran, come on.” She said, pleading. “The parade is gonna pass any minute.” Her voice spikes with excitement. She tales his hand and pulls him up from his chair.

Kieran laughs at his friend’s giddiness and voluntarily followed his friend out of the classroom. Kieran could see a lot of people already waiting on the streets.

It’s the Earth Week, a one week full of activity set to save planet Earth from global warming and environmental destruction. It’s a local movement founded by the British teenage singer and Crown Prince Charles Xavier Windsor when he was in middle school that turned into worldwide movement thanks to his popularity and political affiliation. Two years after its foundation, UN has made it mandatory to its members to reserve a week specifically for this event.  Ever since then, the Prince picks a place where he leads the event.  This year he picks Albay, Philippines. Everyone is excited when the announcement came through. It is the buzz of the community.
