“Oh my GOD Nicky! That was soooo funny, baby,” Olivia practically yells as she laughs way too loud at a knock knock joke her boyfriend Nick Jonas told a few seconds before. The two of them were chatting with Taylor Swift and Lorde at the VMA’s during a break. Nick’s best friend Demi Lovato was there too, but she despised having to sit next to Olivia and therefore dropped her mood. She was scrolling through her phone on Twitter, retweeting some fans and checking out what was going on in the Twitter world at the moment. She was still bummed about losing to 5 Seconds of Summer, but she knew they were talented and deserved it. Soon, a security guard came to her rescue right as Taylor was questioning her quietness. Demi was presenting soon, so she had to get up and go to the stage, thankfully.
“Give it up for Maroon 5!” she exclaimed into the microphone, waiting for the camera to switch to the outside stage where Adam Levine would be singing his sexy ass off. Jason Derulo, who presented with her, took Demi by the waist (in a friendly manner, of course – both were in relationships) and led her backstage. She waved bye to him as he decided to head back and sit with Jordin, walking into a room where a bunch of noise was coming from. As soon as she entered, a familiar blonde and a familiar brunette attacked her, shouting “Demi!!” It was Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev, two of Demi’s friends that she only got to see at these kinds of events. They immediately pulled her into a hug, and the singer let out a breath of relief. Finally, she was in a place where she wasn’t going to be annoyed.
Meanwhile, Dylan O’Brien was standing in the corner, sipping on a beer. Everyone he was sitting around had brought their girlfriend/boyfriend/fiancée (in Tyler’s case) while Dylan was flying solo tonight, so he decided to hang out backstage for a bit after presenting for 5 Seconds of Summer. He had been laughing with Nina when she noticed someone coming in to the small room. His eyes followed, and they widened slightly upon seeing who it was: Demi Lovato! No, he didn’t have a crush on her… okay, fine he did. But who could blame him? She’s gorgeous – especially in that sexy red dress she had on tonight that hugged her body just right. A smile formed on his lips at the thought of her, while Julianne and Nina bombarded her.
“Your hair! What, are you Avril Lavigne now?” Nina teased Demi, referring to the shaved side of her head, running her hand over it once. “No, your boobs. Are you trying to seduce everyone in the audience tonight?” Julianne added, both comments making Demi giggle. Nina moved her head to look at Demi’s hair, and only through that action did she see a handsome, scruffy-looking guy (who was still very well put together). She recognized him soon enough as Dylan O’Brien, that guy from the wolf show Maddie and Dallas watched. Boy, did he look good tonight… wait, what was she thinking?! She was with Wilmer… he was all that mattered, right? But Dylan was looking right at her… Demi was sure her cheeks were the same shade as her dress, although the lack of lighting in the room made her hopeful that the girls wouldn’t see it.
When she returned his gaze, Dylan almost turned his head away bashfully. He wasn’t the most confident around girls – especially not ones as intimidatingly beautiful as Demi. They had a stare down for a couple of seconds, until she dropped her head, pushed her hair behind her ear, and bit her lip. Dylan couldn’t help but smirk. He put his drink down, getting ready to approach her, when a guard appeared through the curtain and motioned for Demi to go with him. Julianne and Nina moaned, wanting her to stay and chat, but whatever was going on seemed urgent, so Demi hugged them goodbye and walked out. Dylan watched her the whole time, cursing himself for not doing anything sooner (not that she was backstage for very long for him to have talked to her). He shook his head at himself, though, picked up his drink and took a long swig. There went his only chance to make Demi Lovato fall in love with him.
