"Make sure you take this medication every day with your breakfast Mrs Xi and I'm sure you will feel so much better within a week." He hands a frail old lady a set of antibiotics with a calming and warm smile. His favourite patients are the older ones as they have so many amazing stories to tell.
Who was this new doctor?
Byun Baekhyun.
He never planned to go into medicine but when the idea was put into his head by a friend, he couldn't help but want to make a difference with people. Luckily for him, he wasn't alone in the hospital as he had his bestest friend LuHan by his side.
Four years ago, the two of them finished their college degree and moved over to Beijing to start a new life, away from all the drama they had been through during their three years in college. Of course, there was heartbreak, fights (physical ones as well as verbal), plenty of tears and some painful goodbyes. The biggest goodbye he had to give was to his ex, Park Chanyeol.
Back during school, they were more in love than Romeo and Juliet and went through all the struggles together. However, after being scouted by SM Entertainment, the two broke apart and decided to end their relationship. It wasn't easy for either of them but both knew it was the best option.
Baekhyun cried for days and even missed a few school days to it. Even four years later, seeing Chanyeol on tv in China hurts him. He tries hard not to let it bother him but when he hears his young patients talking about him, memories come flooding back.
Imagine kissing him.
I know, he's so dreamy.
Can you imagine dating him? His cuddles would be so warm and comforting.
What about the dates? I bet he would take you to special restaurants and pamper you like crazy.
Of course, remembering all these moments hurt. Why wouldn't they?
"Okay so Mrs Xi is discharged so who do I need to treat next?" Baekhyun asks, standing in front of the desk which looks out onto the six beds on ward 3.
LuHan looks down at the two files he has in his hands. "Well, you can either have Mr Shang who is suffering with stomach ulcers and is experiencing severe vomiting or you can have the number one Chanyeol fan, little miss Jiao who is suffering with palpitations. Take your pick."
Baekhyun sighs. "I don't want either if I'm honest. As cute as the young girl might be." He looks over to bed number 2 where there is a ten year old girl watching a video compilation of Chanyeol's silly and stupid moments, wearing a t-shirt with his face on.
"You have to pick one. Vomit guy or Chanyeol fan?" LuHan asks, once again, hoping this time Baekhyun will actually answer his question.
He rolls his eyes. "I don't feel like having vomit covered clothes today so I'll take the girl."
LuHan passes him Jiao's file. "I wish you good luck."
"You too." Baekhyun says. He accepts the file and walks over to the young girl. Her mom taps her gently to put the phone away. "Hello, I'm Doctor Byun and I'm going to be your doctor for today. I hear your heart is beating too fast. Is that right?"
The young girl smiles. "Yup. Chanyeol keeps making my heart race." She lets out a small giggle as her mom rolls her eyes.
"Don't be so silly. Sorry about that doctor. She was complaining of chest pain last night and throughout the night it became worse. I brought her in today and they said they need to restart her heart. I'm rather concerned about what that means." The young girls mother says.
Baekhyun smiles. "I assure you, she'll be fine. We will pass an electric current through her heart and it will stop it for a second and restart it. It will hurt but we will give her something to make her sleepy so she won't remember it."
"Thank you. It's horrible seeing your child in pain. Do you have any?" The woman asks.
He shakes his head. "No I don't."
She smiles. "Well, I'm sure once you have some, you'll understand how worrying looking after children can be. The last thing you want is for them to be in pain."
"That's true. If you'll excuse me, I'll go and book the cardio team to come down and perform the procedure for you." He lowers his head respectfully and walks over the desk. He sighs deeply and calls up to book the team.
LuHan walks over. "You look like you need a strong drink."
"Trust me, I do." Baekhyun replies. "I've just been speaking about having children. I'm just thankful she didn't ask about a girlfriend."
LuHan chuckles. "I don't think Yixing would appreciate being called a woman."
The two laugh a little. "Well, she's fine until the cardio team have been so I guess it's onto the next patient. The emergency centre is crazy today I swear."
Just as Baekhyun is about to pick up another file, a man comes in. "Can I get some help? He's fallen over and I think he's dislocated his ankle."
"Bring him over here to bed 4." Baekhyun says, waving to the man. Baekhyun goes over to the bed and quickly prepares it for the man, however, nothing can prepare him for his next patient. He looks up and sees him sat in a wheelchair, face covered in sweat. "Let's get him on the bed." Baekhyun says, calmly as possible.
The man hobbles onto the bed with the help of the other man and Baekhyun. "He was practicing on his own and fell awkwardly off the stage." The man who wheeled him in says. "I'm Kim Hyunjin, his manager."
"Well I can tell it's dislocated. I'll get an x-ray done and then we can pull it back into place. But we need to do it quickly, his foot is beginning to turn blue." Baekhyun says. He tells one of the nurses to order an emergency bed x-ray immediately while he checks him for any other painful areas.
"It's my god damn leg that hurts!" He shouts, his eyes closed from the pain.
Baekhyun passes him the gas and air for the pain and walks over to the desk, his breathing and heart rate increasing. LuHan notices and jogs over. "Baek? You okay?" He shakes his head. "What's wrong?"
"Have you seen the patient in bed 4?"
LuHan looks over. "No. Who is it?"
"Ch-Chanyeol..." Baekhyun replies, trying to calm himself down.
LuHan turns his head fast to see the large frame lying on the bed, his ankle swelling up while a nurse checks his blood pressure and other vitals. "Oh my god. Do you want me to take over?"
Baekhyun shakes his head. "I have to do this. I took on the patient so I have to do it."
"You sure?"
"I'm sure." He takes a deep breath and walks back over to Chanyeol on the bed. "X-ray are on their way and will be here in a minute."
Chanyeol opens his eyes now the medication is easing his pain. His eyes open wide when he sees Baekhyun filling out the paperwork on the bottom of the bed. "B-Baekhyun?"
Baekhyun looks up, scared. "Hm?" He hums.
"It is you. It's been years." Chanyeol adds. "I mean, how are you doing?" His words are filled with air, trying to cover the pain he is enduring.
"I'm fine, thanks." Baekhyun replies, focusing back on the notes. "I'll just go and grab some painkillers and a drug to make you sleepy for when we realign your ankle. I will advise staying off of it for at least two weeks while it heals. Bed rest is the best." He turns around and walks off while the x-ray team do their own job.
Baekhyun enters the storage cupboard where the medication is stored and breaks down into tears. As strong as he wants to be, it's too hard for him. The love of his life is back and lying in his hospital bed as his own patient. He has moved on but seeing the person you thought was the love of your life is hard after 4 years.
Why now...?
