Alison's POV:
I woke up early the next morning, my mind already set for a mission. Slamming the door behind me while Pansy shouted something about the beauty sleep, I ran all the way to Dumbledore's office.
I was about to knock on the door when it opened slightly. I entered the room. Dumbledore was sitting in his chair, his phoenix resting softly on his shoulder. "Miss Dern, I have been waiting for you for a long time." Whenever I talk to Dumbledore, I am immediately intimidated. Clearing my throat I decided it was now or never.
"Why was I switched into Slytherin?" I said, deciding to get straight to the point. Dumbledore sighed and then stood up. "Alissandra, every year after the sorting happens, I place the hat on my bookshelf. As you can see, it is not heavily guarded. It would have been very easy for Voldemort to evaporate into Hogwarts and enchant the hat so it would place you, Ms. Granger, Mr. Potter, and Mr. Weasley into Gryffindor. I do not yet know why, but I felt strongly that you should return to your actual houses for the rest of your schooling."
'But how did you find out?" I asked.
"I was going through some spells when i accidentally hit the hat with a truth spell. He told me how Voldemort had snuck into this castle six years ago and enchanted the hat. I was completely shocked. My theory is that Voldemort is planning some attack on Gryffindor very soon which is again why I switched all four of you."
I was shocked. I thought that Gryffindor was where I belonged, where someday my kids would also be accepted.
Instead, it turned out that I really was meant to be sentenced to the dungeon.
Then I decided to ask the question that was scaring me. I took a big breath of air, and then spoke. "What happened the day that I was moving my trunks down to Slytherin?"
Dumbledore pressed his forefinger to his temple. "Ah, yes. Now Ms. Dern, I cannot answer that question, but I can answer a different one that I think you should be asking. Why are you alive? My answer is..."
"That you're not."
Dumbledore and I whipped around at the voice that was coming from the door. "Hermionie?" I said. She stepped into the room. "Alison, I think that the day of the incident when Draco saw you fall, his future self was already racing towards you. When you described the world splitting in two, I realized that we must have divided up time somehow so that in an alternate universe Alison really did crash and is now dead."
"So am I dead?" I said. Hermionie sighed. "You should be. But somehow we are here, and you are standing with a beating heart. What I think is happening is that unless you go back in time and stop the world from splitting in two, then weird things are going to start happening."
This all started to make sense. "Like the snowing in August!" I exclaimed. "Yes" Hermionie said, "first it will start with weather, than it will be personalities changing. I don't know what happens after that, but let's not find out."
I was so excited to fix this entire mess, to get on with my life! But as we raced out of Dumbledore's office, I stopped in my tracks, a shocking thought coming over me.
"What happens if I die?"
Dumbledore came up behind me and placed a hand on my shoulder. "We have to somehow erase the real version of time by making sure Draco catches you without the time-turner before you hit the ground."
