Elena heard the sounds of her mother's screams from her tall white barred crib. It echoed through the big house and the intricate oak floors. It sounded like muffled cries but it was hard to tell with her dad's booming voice telling her mom to shut up and take it. He held her up by her long dark braid and delivered punches to her gut repeatedly. She tried to be quiet for me, so she didn't wake me up or make me cry but she couldn't help but make noises as my dad abused her. He knew how to make her cry very well.
I wanted to make him stop. I didn't understand why he was hurting mommy. I thought he loved her. I started to cry from fear and disbelief of my daddy. I just want it to stop. Maybe if I cry he will stop.
But I cried and cried and cried for a really long time but still I heard him beating her. Eventually all I heard was silence. Mommy? Is she okay?
Daddy walked into my room and I immediately stopped crying. I hide under my teddy bear. He just grabs his keys and leaves. Doesn't even see me there. I am thankful. But now I'm scared for mommy. Is she okay?
He hums a strange but peaceful tune. It scares me more though. When I hear him leave I stand up and try to climb my crib to check on mommy. I make it to the top bar and push myself over the side. I hear a loud crack and see my arm twisted on the ground. After that I can't move and all I hear is the sound of deafening silence. So much silence that you can hear your own breathing echo. My eyes started to drift but my arm ached. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. My eyes looked though the open doorway that led down the hall. Mommy's amber eyes were open but she was laying on the floor. She didn't move at all when I cried. Why isn't she waking up?
