31st December 2017 - The Day of the Accident

Staring at my father's sleeping figure, I waited patiently for the doctor to come and check up on him. I held his hand, silently praying for him to be okay. The rise and fall of his chest, the only indication he was still alive.

The room was eerily quiet, the only sounds made were from the heart rate monitor and my dad's heavy breathing. I thought of Jay then. He was standing outside, waiting for me. A bitter sweet smile makes its way to my lips as I remembered how fast Jay was driving to the hospital, a look of worry taking over his features, while my trembled with the fear that consumed my thoughts and emotions.

Dad never drinks.

I break out of my thoughts when I feel Dad's left hand shake compulsively on mine.

"Dad? Dad!"

The monitor began to beep repeatedly, and I find my heart following its rhythm as I rush out to find a doctor. Jay, who was sleeping soundly on the floor nearby, awoke abruptly when I approached him, my footsteps echoing across the hall.

"Jay, Dad needs a doctor. Now!"

I focused on taking deep breaths to calm myself while I waited for Jay to fetch a doctor. I was so busy trying to stay calm, I didn't notice Dad's body had stilled, his heavy breathing stopped. The monitor made a long beep, and even from where I was standing, I could see a sense of calm take over Dad's face as the monitor quieted down and the room fell into silence.

I couldn't move, couldn't breath. I heard a ding sound and looked up to find the source of the sound. It was the clock, striking midnight. It was New Year.

Happy fucking New Year to me.

I don't know how much time passed before Jay was by my side, panting.

"All the doctors were busy but luckily I found one. He's coming over right-" He stops talking when he finally takes in my solemn expression and a look of sadness takes over his features as his gaze falls on my father. Then a sudden look of determination crosses his face.

"Jay, what are you-"

I stop talking as soon as the the doctor saunters in, like he owned the place.

"My apologies, we were having a briefing. That's why there weren't any doctors on duty"

"Now, where's the patient?" he says slowly and confidently.

Jay points at my still father and the doctor's gaze follows his finger. He takes a deep breath as he takes in the whole scene. He then turns to face us, his expression completely blank.

"I need you two to leave."

I stare at him in disbelief.

"Look, there are some tests and examinations I need to run on the deceased and your presence will not be required, but would rather be a burden" he says without emotion and I find myself flaring up.

Before I could so much as utter a word, Jay drags me out of the room.

He pins me to the wall and stares at me intensely. Dumbstruck, I don't say anything and just stare back at him. We hold each other's gaze until Jay closes his eyes, then sighs.

When he finally opens them, he says "Kira, there's something I've been meaning to tell you ever since you stepped into that part."
