I filled my bedroom with light, as I could no longer see with just the light coming through my window. I always long for all the natural light I could get, as I was usually locked away in my dorm. I spent hours and hours practicing my violin so I could one day become a professional violinist. Hour after hour, day after day, all I could think about was achieving my dream.
However, today was different; I was invited to a New Years party by a classmate of mine, and according her her, everyone was going to be there. I, reluctantly, accepted her invitation, despite not being very fond of parties.I put my violin away and was preparing to enjoy myself, even though I thought I wouldn't. I thought I would be optimistic about tonight; maybe I would meet someone nice to talk about music with? No, no; I must take my mind off of music, at least for tonight.
I got dressed in my best clothes, mainly in pastel pink, my favorite color. I made sure to dress warm to fight off the unbearable, December weather. I curled my long, black hair, which was freshly dyed last weekend, and gazed into the mirror. I sighed, knowing as soon as I went out, I would want to go home. There is no harm in going out, I told myself, especially on New Years Eve.I left my dorm and stepped onto the freshly fallen snow. I already regretted my decision to go out, but after getting all dolled up for this occasion, I know there is no going back. The place the party was at was not a long walk for me, and I saw other people walking to the party so I knew I was heading in the right direction. Despite all the people walking with each other, laughing, talking, and playing around, I walked alone. I put my earbuds in and turned on my favorite classical playlist.
Despite all the people, I was alone.
I like it like that, however...
Right...?I arrived at the venue for the party, which was just a rented out space in a restaurant. The atmosphere was cozier than I thought it was going to be; the movies I have seen depict college parties as being wild, but this was anything but that. It was still a bit loud for my liking, but nothing can be perfect. I grabbed a drink and some food and sat down by myself, fiddling with my phone and waiting for something interesting to happen. What seemed like hours were actually mere minutes as I sat awkwardly at this party. I didn't know anyone, nor did I have the desire to talk to strangers.
Suddenly, I heard something, a familiar tune. It caught my attention, but I did not know where it was coming from. I remember hearing this melody long ago, yes, it was a sort of rock song I liked when I was younger. I loved rock music, and was sort of a "bad girl" when I was younger. However, I am not like that anymore, and have grown up to love classical music.
I have grown up to be more like her.I got up off of the seat and began to follow the melody. It was what sounded like a guitar, maybe an electric one? I was unsure, but I am curious to find out who could play that song so perfectly. Within a minute I was at the other side of the room where the melody was, and I quickly located the source. It was a girl about my age playing the acoustic guitar, dressed in edgy, rocker clothing. She was surrounded by a few people listening to her music, but she was clearly concentrating on her melody. She had her eyes closed and her head down, pouring her heart and soul into her music.
My heart skipped a beat...When the song was over she was met with applause; it made me long for my violin at my dorm. She looked up and to her audience, in which she thanked us for listening. The others begged for another song before she even had a chance to catch her breath. We suddenly locked eyes, and time stood still; where does she look so familiar? She couldn't be, could she...?
But it was.Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped. She recognized me after we locked eyes for what seemed like forever. Her unmistakable voice called out my name like she used to do in the past.
"Silvia??? Is that you?"She looked shocked, then immediately overjoyed. I was still in shock; I thought we would never see each other after we split paths in high school. However, it seems destiny did not want to keep us eternally apart. Fate is usually a cruel soul, however, today she wasn't so cruel.
I finally responded to her, calling her name like I did once in childhood.
