After everyone was dressed and ready, we got into our van and left. Gil was working so he couldn't come to the adoption, but he was going to come to the party after the adoption.
"Alright, we should be able to get there on time," I spoke, as I sat in the front seat of the van, attempting to touch up my makeup a bit. Being a detective and getting called out early in the morning made me very good at doing my makeup in the car.
"Are you sure, Mom?" Mary asked. I looked at her through the visor mirror and nodded.
"I'm sure, hon-" I started but then the van started to make a grumbling like noise, and I looked at my husband and he gave me a nervous smile.
"We might not make it on time..."

We stood on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck to show up, and for Fin and Munch to come out in the sedans to pick us up. I absolutely hated how today was going to be full of issues.
"Mom, can you call the courthouse and ask them to give us a later court time?" Mary asked, as she walked up and stood beside me. I wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her close as I sighed.
"There is an adoption right after ours. They won't be able to." I breathed. I kissed her temple gently before she rested her head against my shoulder.
"I knew this wouldn't happen. This all is too good to be true." Mary whispered. I could hear the tears in her voice as Meredith started to cry where she was with Elliot.
"Honey, we will get there in time. We will adopt you today. Today is the freaking day we planned on and it is the day it will happen." I spoke, stubbornly. We walked over to Elliot and I took Meredith from him and gave him Mary. I held her close and bounced a bit as I hummed softly to her.
Tears welled in my eyes because I was so angry at the world because for some very stupid reasons we may not be able to adopt Mary on the day we promised her that we would.
"Liv?" Elliot asked as he walked over to where I swayed with our baby in my arms.
"Yeah?" I sighed.
"I'm going to call the court. Judge Montgomery is overseeing this all, and I'm sure he will give us a later time today. We have twenty minutes before our call time, and I don't think we can get there in time." Elliot spoke, as he ran his hand over my back. I turned to look at him and shook my head.
"Elliot, look at Mary. Look at the tears on her cheeks and how absolutely disappointed she looks. Like at Chris! He's crying too because he doesn't think he's getting his big sister today, officially. Cynthia is a mess because she's pregnant and freaking out because we are on the side of a road waiting. My mother is the only completely calm one. Even our baby is angry. This day has to work out. I won't let it end any other day. Mary will be adopted today, even if I have to burst into the courtroom a minute before our time is done and sign the papers with just an 'x', okay?"
"Okay. I'll call Fin and ask where they are. Get the rest of the stuff out of the car, and as soon as everyone is here, we will leave."
[*]
Meredith got sick all over my dress and her outfit, so when we finally arrived at court and we actually ran in to sign the papers, I was wearing a pair of jeans and one of John's spare button-ups he keeps in his sedan.
"We are here! And we are so sorry to be late!" I exclaimed. Chris and Meredith had stayed outside with my sister and my mother, and they were going to get back to the house to set up the party and we were going to figure out a way to get home.
"Mr. and Mrs. Stabler, there is two minutes before your time is up. What took you all so long?" Judge Montgomery questioned, as he leaned back in his chair and propped his head up on his arms.
"We had car troubles. One minute now. Can we please sign the papers? Please?" I begged, as I held Mary's hand and squeezed it tightly.
"Please, Judge Montgomery. I just really want to be a Stabler." Mary begged as tears welled in her dark brown eyes.
"You all are lucky that I like you because if you were anyone else, you wouldn't be able to do this. Step forward, we can sign the papers now."
[*]
Elliot and I managed to get the papers signed the adoption official. Once that was done, we left and headed back to our house. I took a shower and changed into clothes that were actually mine, before heading downstairs as people started to arrive.
"Hey, you guys really did a good job. Thanks." I smiled, as I hugged Cynthia, before going and hugging my mother.
"Well, we needed to make this look good because there is a new family member we have to welcome in the right way." Cynthia smiled. I nodded as tears welled in my eyes.
"I have a teenage daughter," I whispered.
"And you look like you have a teenage daughter." My sister grin. I rolled my eyes before walking away from them and looking around for my kids. I walked out back and the crew was already sitting around our fire pit and drinking beer. I smiled as I walked towards the back and to where the swing my parents put in was still standing. I smiled when I saw my daughters, son, and husband all sitting there and rocking.
"So, is this what we are going to do now that we are officially a family?" I asked, as I walked over and picked up my son as he giggled.
"We are too tired to do anything else." Mary yawned.
"I understand that, love. So, are you happy?" I questioned.
"So happy. Thanks, for everything." She breathed.
"I feel like there are four days that make me the happiest when I think about that." I laughed softly.
"Four?" Elliot asked.
"The day I married you. The day we adopted Chris, today, and the day Meredith was born." I smiled.
"I have five. The fifth one is the day I met you." Elliot grinned and I rolled my eyes.
"Let's not try to one-up each other, Mom and Dad. Let's just enjoy the day. Now, I'm hungry." Mary smiled. We all agreed but we didn't move. We were too happy sitting together and just thinking about today.
