"So Harry, we thought you would be the perfect person to assist us in making one of our cancer patients dreams come true. Are you familiar with the Make A Wish foundation?" I nodded my head, just a slight movement since I was confused, but she still caught it.
"Okay, great! So we have a boy, level three thyroid cancer and level two liver cancer, whose wish was to have a friend. And we thought that besides your disability, you're a friendly enough person. You'd be the perfect person for this, and all because you are unable to speak! This boy is easily startled and isn't very social, but how social can you be when you've had cancer for two years and the last time he saw anyone besides doctors and friends was after your first round of chemotherapy?"
I shrugged.
After all, I only know what it's like to be mute, not what it's like to have a life threatening disease.
I wonder if I should be offended by the way she was talking about me, as if I was some sort of pawn in her game. Probably.
"-so we were wondering in you'd like to meet this boy and befriend him? And don't worry about his reaction to you, he's very nice and timid although most people in his situation would be bitter and angry at the world. So, will you do it?" Dr.Clark asked, interrupting me from my train of thought. I thought out the pros and cons of doing this.
Pros: I get another friend, I make a cancer patient's wish come true, if it doesn't work out it won't harm me in any way.
Cons: He could hate me, I could end up having a crush on him and he could be straight,(who am I kidding? That probably won't happen because I really like Louis at the moment.), he could die at any moment.
After thinking all these things through, and a little bit about how cute Lou looks when he smiles,(which is rare) I came to a decision.
I scribbled on the piece of paper she had provided me with and passed it over to her.
She nodded her head.
"We could arrange this, but I'm not so sure about letting Zayn in." I pouted, using the best puppy face I could manage. "Fine," she sighed, "but we'll have to wait until his testing is over."
I nodded enthusiastically. This was great.
"Well, that's that then. Oh, and starting today Niall will be undergoing radioactive therapy, so you wont be able to meet him until he's done, which should be in about two weeks. Bye!"
I waved bye and stood up from the table. As I put my hand on the door handle, she rested her hand on my bicep.
"Hey, thanks for doing this. It means a lot to his family." She said softly.
I simply nodded in response and walked out the door to my mum who was waiting for me.
"Did it go well?" my mum asked after squeezing me in a tight embrace. I nodded and smiled.
As we walked out to the car, I wondered if I had made the right choice or not.
