There is a lie that has been spread amongst the church (think carefully as you define what the word "church" means, as the majority of you will define it incorrectly) that all things mediocre, lackluster, dull-witted, short-sited or my personal favorite, "simple", should be praised and accepted as the norm and that we as Christians should align our lives with it. Any one that exceeds this standard is "showy" or trying to distract us from God or somehow keeping us from continuing our walk with Christ. I see this happen quite often within the "Christian Rock/Metal" scene. As if our musical "worship", (that's another one you have to be careful defining) to an almighty God is, by law, required to be uninteresting, uncaptivating, lacking even an ounce of creativity and is therefore doomed to a pathetic, colorless existence of satisfactory mediocrity.

Do not misunderstand what I am saying. This does not mean that if you only know how to play 3 chords then you are not good enough to worship God through music. What I am saying is that if you are a master musician that chooses to only play 3 chords due to laziness or some crippling social/church standard that allows and promotes the bigotry of excellence, then shame on you. I believe as artists we are called to give our very best to God! That is how we truly worship the Father through our art! In worshiping God, giving our very best, we are inviting those around us, who are experiencing our art, to worship with us. The idea is that the "audience" is not a requirement for my worship to my God but that as an artist I will worship the Lord at all times! This lie not only has to do with music but it seeps into all areas of our lives. This lie requires consistent failure and the systematic breaking down of our faith. Shame on us for letting this lie define our art, our faith and our lives. Shame on me for being satisfied with mediocrity. 2014 is going to be a year of definitive statements. This is not a new years resolution but a homecoming...
