I quickly found a manager to help get Charlie settled in while I went to clock in on time. One of my Co workers named Jessica who is normally a total bitch bumps into me.
"Oops sorry Evie didn't see you."She says genuinely and smiles as she makes her way towards to dressing rooms.
Confused I check the back of the store for my best friend Ariael. Now to set the record straight Ariael is my best friend in the whole wide world, she is so freaking gorgeous and graceful but has a temper out of this world. I mean she would be a hot head and all since she is a Lycan, or werewolf, whatever suits your fancy.
Ariael is about two inches taller than me. I got the fairy height gene, only reaching around 5'2. Now werewolves are usually born 6'2 and taller, I guess Ariael got the runt genes because she is a shorty. Even though Ariael isn't as big as her many siblings she is way quicker than the rest.
"Ari darling where are you!" I yell in a mediocre seductive voice.
"I'm right here darling." She says slowly peeking around a clothes rack.
"Ok Ari on a serious note... Charlie got a job here, she starts today!" Eyes squeezed tight whilst holding my breath I open one eye to few the damage.
"Why are you sounding so scared? I don't mind your cousin being here. We do need another person to help make Jessica miserable." She laughs.
"So you're not mad?" I cock my head to the side.
"No I'm not mad, and I smelled her with you a mile away." As she nonchalantly walks away.
Ok, get this, My Aunt Lulu makes a brew that mask my scent from any supernatural being, even of they're none near as a precaution if one is around the town. That being said it's not permanent, she sets the duration of time when I'm out and about, so I have a strict schedule. But this one time I was called into work unexpectedly the brew timed out.
Ari was talking to a customer when suddenly she started breathing hard. People around her thought she was having a asthma attack when actually she was trying to sniff me out. It only took one minute for her to find me in the back of the store hiding in the spot she hides in when she is dodging her responsibilities.
"What the hell are you." she beamed. Looking more curious than menacing.
Werewolves are the Switzerland in the whole supernatural war fare situation. They don't like to be in fights cause they usually always end up getting bitten by a Vampire or hexed by a Fairy, so they keep to themselves.
I mumbled to her "Um Ari what are you talking about." She said I reeked of curiosity and something she quite couldn't put her claw on. I always knew Ari was a werewolf, she just didn't know that I knew. Didn't take much longer till we both confessed and promised to keep our identities hidden, my Auntie Quinn even went as far as doing a blood oath on Ari to insure my wellbeing.
They assigned a pretty nice person to train Charlie for the day so I knew she was in good hands. I walk to a stand of jeans thrown all over the place by the bitchy 8th graders tearing the store apart.
I have a terrible habit of holding my breath to see how long I could hold it for which is three and a half minutes. Vampires don't necessarily need to breath, only to hunt and smell things, but the fairy half needed oxygen. In the midst of my child's play I run into the rock hard chest of a unknown person.
"Damn watch out girl!" The unknown person maliciously spits.
I exhale and breathe in the pungent odor of a male vampire, the whiskey on his breath and the smell of marijuana on his lips. I turn to see a 6'4, muscular built vampire in a dark blue and gray striped tank top, black ripped and distressed jeans and black combats looking me up and down. His furrowed eyebrows relax and his glowing blue eyes go back to their calm nautical state. His lips slightly open to mumble something incoherent and like that he was gone.
I didn't even notice Ari and Charlie not too far behind on both sides of my body, as if they're both protecting me.
"What in the hell just happened." Charlie mumbled.
"I have no idea." Ari whispered.
"Me either." I chirped.
"What is a Vampire doing here?" Charlie exclaimed as if she was reading my mind. I have no idea what happened or who that giant vampire was, but I sure felt my inner Judy Bloom awaken.
The rest of the day breezed on by, the usual rude managers were surprisingly really nice, even the customers suddenly threw compliments my way. Even Jessica was being too nice for comfort. I wonder if the tweak in the brew affected humans who were in a close proximity to me.
I clocked out and sat in the car waiting for Charlie while she flirted with way too many guys that I couldn't count with two hands.
"Evie what would you think would have happened if you didn't drink the brew your Aunt Lulu made for you? Do you think that guy would have attacked you or something?" She asked.
"I don't know what would have happened, but that guy was rude when he ran into me then suddenly his attitude changed. It was so strange." I breathed. "Tomorrow I'm going into Lulu's to ask her about the brew, maybe she knows what's up."
I start the car and head home for some much needed rest.
