    She put her change in the payphone and glanced nervously back at the car where Willy Jack was waiting, her eyes lingering, counting the rimgs until he picked up.
    "Chauncey's bookstore" one ring. She didn't even have time to prepare herself for what she was going to say.
    "..."
    "Hello?"
     "Forney, I lied to you"
    "Novalee?"
    "I told you that I didn't love you, not in the way you needed to be loved, and that lie was so big that it changed my life"
There was silence on the other end.
"...it's too late, isn't it, Forney?"
"...why?"
Her voice dropped down to  an almost whisper, "because I wanted you to go back to school, to be a history teacher like you always wanted. I didn't want you to work at the Plastics factory, where the employees do the same thing every day, and never get a break. I didn't want that life for you, Forney. You're a college-educated man, and I was a high-school drop-out, and I thought I wasn't good enough for you."
"There's nothing better than you, Novalee" he said in a low, husky voice.
But, the payphone just barely cut him off. She frantically rummaged through her purse, desperate for more change. Instead, there was a roll of lint and a purple button that had fallen off of Americus's dress.
Novalee rushed back to the car.
"Willy Jack, do you have any change?
"Hell no" he replied turning his pockets inside out.
"Okay, then, I guess we're going to have to drive a bit faster"
