The room quickly grew dim once Allie flipped the lightswitch off in her office. Most everyone had gone home since it was after the work day and she was one of the few people left. A little over an hour ago, Chris had poked his head into her office and said he was leaving but she couldn't pull herself away from her drawings yet.
She finally had gotten all of her ideas out though and decided to call it a day. Allie tucked her curls behind her ear before tossing her bag over her shoulder and heading out of the building and through the Disney facility that was falling dim in the evening light.
As she made her way to the parking lot, she saw a familiar tall frame walking a little way in front of her. Chris usually always went to the on-site gym either before or after work and she figured he must have just finished and was leaving. A smile spread across her lips before she quietly snuck her short frame behind him and while he was tossing his gym bag in his trunk, she ran up and tapped him on the shoulder, causing him to whip around quickly with a startled look in his blue eyes.
"That scared me," Chris admitted while his broad shoulders relaxed.
Allie just giggled and told him, "That was the point, silly!"
Chris chuckled before closing his trunk and asking, "Are you just leaving now?"
"Yeah I finished the drawings I was working on so I'm headed home now," She answered his question. "What are you up to?"
"Well I kind of have a thing I'm headed to," The quiet man shrugged.
Allie wasn't phased by his vague answer and pressed on while she rocked back and forth on her feet, "Like what kind of a thing? Like a date kind of a thing?"
He looked down, laughing softly to himself at the irony of her question. He loved the way she was unafraid to ask questions and get to know him on a deeper level in a way that a lot of people didn't seem to know how to do with the shy man and he just wished he had the same unafraid way to answer her and tell her the only date he wanted to go on was with her. But he couldn't seem to muster that kind of courage and ended up just shaking his head.
"No, not like a date.... Well actually.... I guess it sort of it...." He got a smirk on his face.
Allie was completely intrigued and Chris knew he had her full attention so he decided to ask her, "Do you want to come with me?"
"On a date?" Allie scrunched her nose up, completely confused.
Chris went over and opened his passenger door for her before leaning his hunky frame on it and saying to her, "Just trust me."
He nodded his head toward the car, motioning for her to get in which she immediately did. Once she was in the seat, Chris closed the door gently before going over to get in the driver's seat and started the car. As they were driving, Allie relaxed in her seat while her brain replayed Chris' words 'just trust me' over and over again in her brain.
Allie loved people. She truly enjoyed, delighted in, and thrived off of people but if she was honest with herself, it was hard for her to trust people. With so many hurts from people who should have loved and been there for her, she had a hard time fully trusting people, especially people she didn't know very long.
Somehow though, with Chris it wasn't that way. She didn't understand how easily she trusted him completely. He just was so honest and transparent, his heart so pure and authentic it felt almost impossible not to trust him fully. For the first time ever, she had felt like she could talk to someone honestly and not be afraid and it was such a good feeling.
"Why are we at the hospital?" Allie questioned once they pulled in the parking lot.
"You'll see," He just gave her a sideways smile.
She let out a playful groan, wanting to know the answer which only made Chris laugh. He grabbed his black backpack out of his backseat before he walked with Allie into the hospital. She kept asking him what they were doing there the entire way in, but he didn't crack.
Chris opened the door to the children's wing of the hospital and gently put his hand on the small of Allie's back, guiding her through the door as she walked in before he followed her. She watched as he and the front desk woman smiled at each other and he kept walking down the hallway before going into a big common room for all of the kids in the hospital.
There were video games, televisions, toys of all kinds and a wall of art supplies. The room was an amazing addition to give the sick children some joy but Allie still didn't understand why they were here. She quickly figured it out though when all of the small children in the room turned and looked at the pair and shouted, "CHRIS!"
Immediately they all ran over and encircled Chris' hunky body and hugged him. Allie watched happily as Chris kneeled down and took time to hug each of the buzzing children and talk to all of them. He patiently listened to each one and she admired the easy smile on his lips as he heard all of their stories from since they had seen him last.
"Chris, what are you gonna show us how to draw today?" A sparkly eyed boy asked.
"Well I told Maggie that she got to pick..." Chris trailed off, looking around the small group of kids and then around the room before asking, "Where is Maggie?"
"She's not feeling the best, but she's here now" A nurse announced right on cue as she walked in pushing a small girl in a wheelchair.
Allie felt her heart break and her eyes get teary as she looked at the little girl. Her tiny body sat in the wheelchair and all of her hair was gone, obvious that she had undergone treatment recently or still was going through it. She had a mask on her face and a soft cotton pink dress that looked like sleepwear. When the girl was close to Chris, she watched the way her eyes lit up and it was obvious the two had a special relationship.
"You can take your mask off, sweetie," The nurse told her before going over to attend to some of the other children.
Allie intently watched while Chris kneeled down in front of her wheelchair and smiled, "Hi Maggie."
"Hi Chris," The little girl beamed while pulling her mask off. "I missed you since last week."
"I missed you too," Chris told her while he reached out and gently rested a hand on her small cheek while the other was on the armrest of her wheelchair. "You look so pretty Maggie."
The little girl giggled from the big handsome man's comment and then told him that her mom had bought her the new soft dress and he went on to compliment her on it. She then quickly told him she wanted to start drawing and said that she wanted to learn how to draw Elsa this week.
Chris gently picked her up in his thick arms and carried her to the table where he sat down and put her in his lap comfortably. He then looked over and his blue eyes locked with Allie. She was frozen in her spot, so saddened to see these precious kids sick but also so touched to see Chris with them. When she saw the little girl happily in his lap, she now made sense of his answer previously about sort of having a date.
"Allie, come meet Maggie," Chris patted the chair next to him.
She blinked back her tears and walked over to sit down before smiling at the girl, "Hi Maggie, I'm Allie."
"Hi, I like your hair," The bald girl giggled while reaching out and playing with Allie's spiral curls. "Are you Chris' girlfriend?"
Allie laughed at the girl's candid nature while Chris just blushed so she answered, "No, we work together though."
"Chris comes and draws with us every week. Are you going to come too?" She asked.
"I'd like that," Allie honestly told her.
"Me too," Maggie told her before hugging up to Chris' firm chest and he just held her tighter. "I love when Chris comes. He teaches me to draw and he's nice and warm and I love him."
Both of the adults were touched by her sweet rambling and it earned her a little snuggle from Chris while Allie just admired the pair. She could have just sat there and watched the gentle way Chris was with all of the children and how much they loved him all day. She thought about how she trusted him so easily and because of her past, she questioned if that trust was misplaced but after seeing how deeply these kids adored him, she knew it wasn't.
