The sound of Chris' motorcycle rumbling filled the parking lot as he drove in and and parked. He pushed the kickstand down and leaned his bike on it after turning it off and pulling his helmet off and hung it on his handle bars. Chris ran a hand through his hair to smooth it down before his blue eyes couldn't help but search the parking lot for a familiar face.
He knew she wouldn't be here. Now she usually got here early and was already in her office by the time he got to work just so Allie could avoid him. Things had been this way for a few weeks, and Chris hated it. His phone ringing interrupted his thoughts and he dug in his back pocket to answer it while walking toward the building.
"Hey Ma," Chris greeted the woman on the other end of the line once he held the phone up to his ear.
"Hi honey," Lisa replied. "I didn't get a chance to talk to you yesterday so I just wanted to see how yesterday went... did you see Allie?"
Chris let out a soft sigh while he walked down the pathway, passing a few people as he answered, "Only in passing. I asked her if she wanted to go to lunch and she said she wasn't hungry and then she left before me."
"Oh sweetheart, I'm sorry," His mother sympathized.
"I actually did a lot of thinking yesterday while I was working out though and I'm going to talk to her today," Chris stated, pushing the door to the building open and heading to the elevator.
"Good for you honey," Lisa said. "Call me later and tell me how it goes, okay?"
"I will Ma, love you," Chris grinned.
His mother told him how much she loved him before Chris hung up the phone and put it back in his pocket. He normally wasn't confrontational or dominant at all but Chris decided that today, he was going to get to the bottom of this.
Chris marched down the hallway and knocked on Allie's office door. He waited for her to tell him to come in, but by the shocked looked in her eyes, he knew that she wasn't expecting him.
Before she could say anything, Chris began, "Allie... we need to talk."
"Chris, we don't need to talk," Allie couldn't help but revert to her normal emotional response of running away. "I need to go give these drawings to Michael."
She stood up and walked around her desk, grabbing the papers and walking toward her door. Chris quickly stood in front of it and told her, "No, you're not leaving until we talk."
"I don't want to talk," Allie muttered.
"Well then you're going to listen," He stated while his bright blue eyes stared down at her.
Allie was so shocked by Chris' straight forward response that she didn't know what to say. Even though her emotions were all over the place, at the core of her being, Allie had an immense amount of respect for Chris and was willing to hear him out.
She leaned against her desk and waited for him to start talking. Chris ran a hand through his soft brown hair and began, "Allie... look I know things have been weird between us but I just couldn't figure out why. I did a lot of thinking yesterday and it all clicked for me."
"What clicked?" Allie asked him.
"Why you've been avoiding me," He shoved his hands in his pockets before he began to nervously ramble, "I realized that the first time I tried to ask you out on a date is when you started avoiding me and you probably knew I was trying to ask you out and then you were trying to avoid me because you didn't want me to ask you out because you didn't want to tell me no. I don't know why I didn't figure it out before... I think I just was blinded by how much I liked you and I guess it just haven't ever really felt this way before and I just really like you but I just want to tell you that I'm sorry and I promise I won't ask you out because as much as I like you, I miss you as my friend too much and I'd rather have that than nothing."
At the end of his rambling monologue, Chris let out a long breath while Allie just stood there blinking like a deer in the headlights. That was the absolute last thing that she expected to hear and she didn't even quite know what to do with it.
"Allie? Please... just say something," Chris softly begged.
She lifted her head, showing him her watery eyes while tucking her blonde curls behind her ears while Allie started, "Chris... I'm really... surprised."
"About what?"
"That... you like me," Allie replied.
Chris tilted his head and said in a serious tone, "Allie, I'm crazy about you."
Because of what she had experienced in her childhood, Allie had always struggled with trust. It was easy for her to love people, but trusting someone else and laying all her emotions on the table was something that was hard for her to do. She always felt like that person would then reject her or leave her later but somehow with Chris... she didn't feel that. She felt safe with him and so for the first time in a long time, she laid all her cards on the table and was completely honest while she told him, "I thought that you tried to ask me out but then realized you didn't want to."
Her past experiences made her hold her breath as she waited for him to either laugh at or ridicule her emotions... but that never came. Chris just walked over to her and gently took her slender hands in his big warm ones while he gazed down into her eyes and told her in a soft tone, "No... I just was really nervous and I was afraid you'd say no."
She squeezed his hands while her familiar smile returned to her lips, "... Want to ask me now?"
Chris couldn't help but chuckle as he ducked his head for a moment before lifting his blushing face back up to look at her and asked her, "Allie... May I take you out on a date?"
She moved one of her hands to rest on his broad shoulder and stood on her tip toes so that she could press a sweet kiss to his smooth cheek.
"I'd love nothing more."
