"I love you, David"

Those were the last words she spoke before her eye lids shut forever. That was also the last day when living made sense to me. It was the ending and beginning of everything that mattered to me.

It was the ending of my social life

The beginning of dad's madness

The ending of any love known to me

The beginning of a whole new adventure.

We used to be one small happy family. Just the three of us, me, mom and dad.

We'd go on family picnics and family vacations we were literally the picture perfect family.

One night mom informed me that she wouldn't be around much longer.

"Are you and Dad splitting" I asked disbelief clear in my voice

She smiled.

That smile; beautiful,happy, peaceful.

Her last smile.

"This is gonna be hard"she said whilst stroking my hair, " I'm not going to be around for much longer sweetie, I'm going to where grandma is."

I think she didn't say heaven because (a) we couldn't tell if my grandmother went to heaven or not ( we had a full on debate) and (b) my mother is so much like my grandmother its kinda scary.

She spoke as if I were a 5 year old.

"W-what?"

"I have cancer, leukemia to be specific"

"Mom there's chemotherapy, we can work something out."

She paused for a second, "it's too much money, and I want you to be comfortable"

I thought long and hard about that word.

I didn't want to be comfortable, I didn't mind any discomfort just as long as she was the there.

Hot tears rolled down my cheeks.

I stared at her for a long time.

Suddenly she stopped everything, stroking my hair, blinking, she stopped.....breathing.

We rushed her to the hospital as fast as we could.

We were too late.

She said those beautiful last words

Then POOF she's gone.

I cross check my stuff making sure I'm not leaving anything behind.

"All I want is the best for you"

"I get it dad" I snap back

"He'll be by the fruit stand"

"Ok"

"Here"

I turn around to face him.

"A gun? Dad, what the actual fu-"

"it's not an actual gun'' He smiles, " it's a lighter."

"I don't smoke"

He drops it on my bed," You'll never know when you'll need it"

He walks out if my room.

I pick the lighter and examine it, I pull the trigger and fire comes out.

"Cool" I whisper, " Thanks dad"

I stuff it into my backpack.
