The sudden sound coming from the adjacent room made Raman holt in his steps. He turned back slowly from the stairs towards the old wooden room.He slowly turned the knob of wooden door which opened slowly making a 'creeek' sound. As he slowly moves inside he found out it was the noise of the old rusted telephone ringing.
He picked up the receiver
"Hello"
And whatever the person on the other side said made him loss his balance. Raman felt rooted to the ground. Telephone reliever slipped from his hands making a loud thump. When Raman's friends found out that he didn't follow up to their room, they came down searching for him as they were reaching the bottom of the stairs they heard the loud noise and immediately rushed towards where Raman was.
They found him on the ground near telephone stand crying his heart out. Laxman was Raman's best friend among all of them and he immediately embraced him in a hug.
"What happened Raman??Why are you crying?" Laxman asked worriedly."Bring him some water" Raja told Naren and rushed towards Raman and Laxman.
"Raman, what happened? Try to take long breathes" Raja said worriedly.
Raman's face was paled and was getting colder, after drinking a glass of water he became some what stable, he wanted to tell something but he started stammering
"My. ..m..y...my....Gr..grandma. ...i. .s. .no...m..more" and he started crying. His whole body was shaking and his friends started consoling him.
After darkest few hours of his life, the very next morning Raman packed all his belongings and left for his village for his grandma's funeral. His friends came till the railways station to bid him goodbye.
Train delayed by a few hours due to some technical problems and instead of reaching at evening 7pm he reached his native station at 12am in mid night. There were no transportation facilities at that time and it was too late.
Normally there were 2 ways to reach his village from that railway station. The normal route which they always used was 10 miles from station and it was a safe route. The other route was 6 miles far. But that route was full of dark forest and people used to say there are lots of spirits wandering on that route so nobody dared to use that route.
Raman had to reach home soon, so he chose the short cut road inspite of being aware of all the danger.
He started walking towards his village using the second route, after 10 minutes of walking he felt someone else beside him.
He turned around, he saw a guy who was almost in his early forties walking beside him. He was wearing thick rimmed glasses, and was wearing a cow boy hat which was very uncommon in that area. He wore a dark red jerkin with black gum boots.
Raman was a bit sacred to walk alone in the godly hours of night, and having another person to walk with was oddly comforting even though he was a stranger.
That guy caught Raman looking at him and smiled faintly. He came near Raman and greeted him.
"Hello my name is Dev"
Raman was hesitating to talk to a stranger because he had never seen that person before near his village but strangely felt calm for having someone with him in that remote jungle in that dark night."Hello Dev, myself Raman"
Raman replied awkwardly.Dev started talking to Raman and told that he is soo happy that he met Raman. He was worried that he had to walk alone in that scary forest.
Raman smiled lightly and asked what is he doing in this forest in the midnight. Dev said that his daughter is studying in the nearby town so he went to meet her. When he returned it was late and he missed the last bus. So he started walking through the forest.
They made it to quite deep in the woods. When Dev suddenly asked Raman "do you believe in Ghosts?".
Raman flinched at the sudden change of topic "Yes..I do why you ask by the way "."Nothing..I had heard a lot people talking that there are many spirits wandering around this forest region and we are alone walking through the this jungle at the midnight".
"Are you scared of Ghosts? " Raman asked in return.
"Who? Me??" Dev laughed an evil laugh. "I was just telling you to be cautious. I am not scared of them. But you never know when they come around and get you."
Raman started feeling uncomfortable with the way Dev started talking suddenly. Dev's demeanour was changing and Raman noticed that.
"There is this thing that all the people around the village always say that is when you are alone spirits may trick you" Dev's eyes suddenly started getting darker.
" But one thing you shouldn't forget ever. If someone calls you by your name 3 times from behind you should never turn back" and hearing this a shiver run down Raman's spine.
They made it to a little far into the dark woods when Raman felt cold all of a sudden and the warm presence of Dev was gone. Raman was so busy in walking he completely forgot Dev. When Raman realised Dev wasn't walking beside him he stopped walking and started searching for Dev. Dev was no where like he was disappeared into thin air. Sweat beads strated forming on Raman's forhead.
Raman was terrified to say the least. He resumed walking ..each step with fear. The dark shallow midnight was giving goosebumps not to forget the cold, pitch black jungle. After a few minutes he felt someone's stare on his back still he didn't stop in his track. As he started walking again someone called his name from behind. Raman didn't turn around, again he heard someone calling his name for the second time still he didn't turn and continued walking.
Raman was shaking with fear..he heard again someone calling his name and the voice was very familiar and Raman realised it belonged to Dev. As soon as he realised Dev was calling him he relaxed a bit and he turned around in a swift move dint thinking much about that was the THIRD TIME HIS NAME WAS BEING CALLED. There was Dev standing a few steps away from Raman with an evil glint. His human face strated mortifying and his features strated changing in a second his body turned scarier and he was converted into a terrifying monster.
Raman was frozen on his place before he can blink his eyes that evil spirit of Dev attacked Raman. And Raman's limp body fell on the ground with a loud thud. Raman embraced death in a pool of blood.
