The story's universe has the normal pets, but also shifter pets of dogs and cats. Shifters are used as normal pets, used for profit, and lastly sometimes abused. They are common in households because they can understand human speech, but normal household pets are found more often though. Humans don't have a problem with shifters in human form in public, but shifters tend to stay in their animal form for security. When they shift into human form, they will shift into a pair of clothes, instead of being completely naked.
Alpha - They are more dominate, aggressive, and stronger than the Omegas. Alphas can impregnate Omegas. A female Alpha cannot become pregnant, but can impregnate Omegas. They are the ones that lead and protect the household/family. They are normally used for guard duty of some kind, but can be a service dog. Alphas go into a rut, a time of sexual tension, once a year. It is usually during the summer, and it can be triggered by an Omega's heat. Their fertility rate is also increased during a rut.
Omega - They are more submissive, kinder, and weaker than the Alphas. Omegas are the ones to carry pups/kittens. A male Omega can't impregnate a female, but can become pregnant. They are the ones to bring an emotional stability to the household/family. They are normally used as childhood pets and service dogs, but they can be guard dogs for families because of their motherly instincts. Omegas go into heat, a time of sexual tension, about once every four months. It usually doesn't have a set season, and it can be triggered by an Alpha's rut. Their fertility rate is also increased during a heat.
Dog and Cat shifters are very even in number, and each set of shifter can be different breeds of dogs/cats. Neither type of shifter is more popular as pets than the other, but people usually match their lifestyle with the shifter type. Example is a more active lifestyle for a dog shifter, and a more relaxing lifestyle for a cat shifter.
