I suddenly wake up in my room in the hospital, my mom and dad by my bed talking to the doctor. I'm 13 again. I look up at my test results, phew it was only a cough, I'm going to be okay. Okay. That word still has a special meaning to me, even though it was all just a dream.
"Hey honey, want to go to the park?" Mom asks.
"Sure" I answer. I love the Holiday park. When we get there I head straight for the swings. I start to drag my feet slightly, I love how the dirt is dark where I pull the wood chips with my feet. I suddenly feel someone watching me. I look up, no one is there, but someone to the right catches my eye. He looks about my age maybe a year or so older. He's wearing a blue button up shirt with a tan leather jacket over it. He's wearing jeans and sneakers. He reminds me of the boy from my dream, Augustus Waters, it still hurts a little to think of him... that dream felt so real. But still I can't help myself. "I'll be right back mom, I'm just going to go talk to that boy, I think I've seen him before."
"Okay honey, be safe," mom barely glances up. Okay. There's that word again. I walk over to the Augustus boy.
"Hi why we're you watching me?" I ask. The boy looks shocked, like I'm an old friend who surprise visited him. He doesn't speak, just stares. I start to feel uncomfortable.
"Because," he finally begins, "Your beautiful." I feel myself blush, but I don't want him to know that, I awkwardly laugh. "No, I'm not"
"Yes you are, and I'm not about to deny myself the simplest pleasures in life." He has such confidence, like he knows he is saying the right thing. He looks, acts, talks like Augustus Waters, down to the way he leans against the
light post.
"Okay..." I hesitate, "what's your name?" He looks at me with that goofy Augustus Waters grin... how much they look and act alike is stunning.
"Augustus Waters" he says, "And you?" I almost can't speak, he's looking at me expectantly, I try to stumble for words. "Hazel Lancaster" I say.
"No, your full name" he responds. This catches me, it's completely deja vu. "Hazel Grace Lancaster"
"Okay, do you want to talk on the Funky Bones?" I smile.
"Sure" we start walking towards the art piece. I look back at my mom. She waves her hands, beckoning me to continue. I turn and keep walking next to Augustus Waters, happy to get a chance to be with my true love again even if it's not the same way.
