That morning, she knew she wanted nothing but blue.
She woke up in a sour mood, due to a racking dream that had her waking up soaked in sweat. Auden, who always joyfully greeted her in the morning, even knew better to mind himself that particular morning.
Her dream had been brimming with red. The color soaked every wall of the dream, making the surface of the dream as slick as the sweat that drenched her body.
She woke up with a thrash and a scream, sobbing.
It wasn't the sort of dream that could be relayed into words. It was the sort of dream that simply left an imprint of the feelings felt, a dream that left a gouging scar without any story of where it had come from.
So she gathered her palette and coated it with shades of blue. Baby blue, to combat the scarlet rain that poured within her mind. Cobalt, to drown out the sea of blood. She gathered the shades and nothing but.
And then she bound the blindfold around her head and stepped out onto the yard, with Auden close at her side. She perched upon her stool, balancing the palette on her left arm.
And then she dipped the paintbrush into a shade of blue... and unleashed herself upon the canvas.

She painted for hours, stopping only to relieve herself before she launched into the art again. She poured over it, feeling the red rain slip off of her, being replaced by a gentle coat of blue satin.
The birds sang overhead. The sound of Auden's breathing calmed her. The relaxation of the dog was enough of a comfort for her. When Auden tensed, she'd worry.

It wasn't long after she'd switched to a different color that Auden lifted his head, dark eyes trailing a figure walking across the street. He did not make a sound, aside from the clicking of the stick that he made as he tapped it upon the pavement. Auden glanced up at Kestrel, who still painted calmly. Her furrowed brows offered she was deep in thought, and couldn't even sense the man who lumbered along the street with the same furrowed brows as she.
He did not alert her. There was no danger with that man. He wore a blindfold, same as she.
And yet, the man did not seem as smart as his Kestrel. He used a stick instead of a canine's eyes. For that, Auden wasn't sure that he liked the man.
But Auden did not fear him.
And then the man stopped, pulling a strange object from his bag. At that, Auden tilted his head as the man pointed his body straight to Auden and Kestrel.
There was a click and a flash of light that left Auden blinking, shaking his head as his vision returned.
Kestrel went still beside him, as if she'd finally sensed that they were not alone. She reached into her lap and grasped the metal object that she always carried, and she waited.
Waited for Auden to snarl softly, to give a warning that they were in danger.
But Auden knew that they were not in danger. Not even as the man lumbered away, using his stick to guide the way.
