Chapter 1

Amber's P.O.V

Amber sighed as she sat down in the basement. Picking at the plate of scraps her mom called a meal. She tossed it to the side and rolled over on the old mattress, closing her eyes she began to drift off  into her own little happy place.

And of course right before she falls asleep her mom slams the door open and angrily stomps down the stairs. Her eyes snapped open and she quickly scrambled up to her desk and sat in the chair, grabbing a pen and pretending to do her  homework. “Get your lazy ass up!” She yelled and pointed at the basement door.

Keeping her head down Amber walked past her mom and almost ran up the steps. She rushed down the Hall and into the kitchen, pulling out pots and pans to make dinner for her parents. Hearing the front door open she gently sat her utensils down and smiled. It was her father. Her dad was always nice. He'd sneak her food and clothes, stuff she'd need to survive. Waiting in the kitchen doorway she bounced on the heels of her feet and waited for her dad to come out of the living room. He walked into the kitchen and smiled down at his daughter. “Hey there princess.”

He whispered softly. Smiling more she wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly. “What would you like to eat daddy?” She whispered back to him. If her mom ever saw how close they were she'd have a fit and hurt her and her dad. So they kept their feelings to themselves when her mother was around them. Most of the time she was drunk and out with “friends” so they didn't worry that much about her. Her dad spoke softly as he kissed her forehead. “Better start dinner before mom comes back...after I change I'll come help ok?” She nodded and pulled away from her father. After he left she pulled out some steak from the freezer and put it in the sink, turning on the hot water to let it thaw out.

While waiting on the steak to thaw she went ahead and grabbed a few potatoes and washed them under the water. She opened a drawer and pulled out a potato peeler. She didn't notice her dad come back and pick up one of the potatoes until he reached into the drawer and grabbed another peeler. She flinched slightly and looked over at him. He gave a soft smile and began peeling the potato in his hand. She smiled back and pulled out her headphones and plugged them into her iPod, humming along to the music. She also began to peel a few of the potatoes until she remembered the steak. She turned to the sink but found it empty. Her dad must've taken it out to the grill. She shook her head a grin appearing on her lips.

After she was done with the potatoes she put them in a pot and began to boil them. After an hour or so dad comes back into the house with the steak on the plate. “Where's Lisa?” She asked while she was putting the plates on the table. She didn't call her mother mom. Her dad looked around and shrugged, guessing she was probably drunk already. “Guess she won't be having dinner…. You'll have her share of dinner.” He smiled down at her and put his hand on her head. She smiled back and took her seat at the table, right next to her father. He disappeared into the kitchen and came back with two plates of food, she could tell he put extra on hers. Licking her lips she drooled and watched him set  the plate down.

“Go ahead sweetie, dig in.” He chuckled softly and sat down in his seat. She didn't hesitate for one second as she dived into her food, scarfing it down quickly. “Careful there, don't want you to choke!” He laughed and ate beside  her, happy that his daughter finally had an actual meal. “Amber I promise you...that when you turn 13...exactly at midnight….I'll get you out of here..” He gripped her hand tightly and smiled softly.

She nodded at him and squeezed his hand back. Why was he taking me at midnight?? Were we sneaking out?? Laying her fork down she wiped her mouth and got up, taking his empty plate with her. As soon as she set the plates down her mother came around the corner. “WhAf da FAq aRe YOU dOingz?!”

When she screamed her voice was slurred and she could hardly understand what she was saying. She took a step back as her mother stumbled forward. Her father appeared in front of her, holding her mother back by the shoulders. Her father growled and she took a step back.He actually growled. She ran and hid under the table as her father glared down at her mother. She could see her mother shaking under his stare. Why was he being like this?... It was...scary...but somehow...normal. She slowly crawled out from under the table and hid in a corner now. And then before she knew it, it was over. She was shaking so much that she didn’t even her notice her dad kneel in front of her.

She jolted and looked up at him. She whimpered softly and hugged him tightly.  “It’s alright….only a few more hours until we can leave princess.” He ran his fingers through her hair comfortingly. “Thank you daddy…..” She whimpered and began to cry softly into his shoulder. He rubbed her back and picked her up, carrying her to the guest room and laying her in the bed. She had cried herself to sleep on their way up to the room, her eyes were puffy and she had snot running down her nose.

He wiped her nose and tucked her into bed, kissing her forehead again. “Sweet dreams princess.” He whispered softly and walked out of the room, closing the door gently behind him. As soon as he closed the door he sighed and rubbed his face. “I hope I’m doing the right thing to send her over to that pack….maybe she’ll be safer there.”

Closing his eyes he huffed softly and went to the kitchen, picking up her unconscious body and walking outside. He shifted quickly and made his royal black fur a light brown color. He shook his giant head and trotted down the street with Lisa on his back. After a few minutes he dropped Lisa on the porch of her mother's house. He licked her cheek softly before  running back to the house and shifting back into a human.

Quickly going up the stairs he starts packing his daughters clothes into a suitcase. He opened the bathroom cabinet and took out a bottle of pills for the heats she was going to have. Throwing it all in the bag he zipped it up and opened the door to the guest bedroom and picked Amber up carefully. He grabbed the bag and walked down stairs, grabbing the keys he walked out of the house and locked the door. Opening the car door he sat her down in the backseat and gently closed the car door. Hopping into the driver side he started the car and backed out of the driveway and headed for the highway. He looked back in the rearview mirror and smiled softly as she slept peacefully.

“Don’t worry princess…. You’ll be safe soon..” He whispered softly and turned his eyes back on the road.
