Nightmares

Azriel was tied to a chair. He couldn't move. He couldn't do anything. He could only watch. Watch how his friends were being tortured right in front of him. Suddenly Elain came before him. She seemed unharmed. "You are a traitor," she said, "you are useless, you are just sitting here while we suffer." Someone came from behind and stabbed her in the chest.

Azriel woke up with a jerk. He was in his room. It was still dark outside. This was the first nightmare he had in centuries. He was breathing heavily and his back was wet with sweat.

He got up and walked on to his balcony. He needed a distraction. The cool air felt nice. It was calming. He breathed in the spring breeze.

During breakfast Azriel didn't bother mentioning his nightmare. When he finished eating he decided to go train. He hung up a punching bag and started training.

While he was training he decided to think about the nightmare. Why was he not being tortured. Why did Elain come and say that. Was he really like that. Was that what others thought of him.

He didn't know. The spymaster didn't like not knowing. He was so used to knowing everything and now he couldn't even figure out what his stupid nightmare meant.

He trained for a long time. It was late afternoon when he decided to stop. He went for a walk into Velaris. He walked past two cloaked high faes. That was weird. Why would they dress like that. Another thing he didn't know.

He set at the beach looking at the families playing and laughing in the cool sea. Suddenly he wished for something he has never wished for. Not even on solstice.

He wished that he could go back in time and change his childhood. Make sure that he wouldn't spend 11 years locked in a dungeon.

During dinner Azriel listened to his friends bickering and arguing. He didn't bring up any of his thoughts from today.

After dinner in the living room, Azriel sat down on the window sill. He was looking at the stars when he heard someone call his name.
"Az." Cassian was saying.
"What? Sorry I wasn't paying attention."
"I was asking if you are coming with us to the summer court after the meeting with Kallias tomorrow?"
"I don't know, I'll think about it." The shadow singer answered his brother.

When Azriel came to his room an awful pain in his stomach, chest and head erupted. He winced. Thinking it was probably nothing he changed, washed and got into bed doing his best to overcome the agony.
