Adam's surroundings looked luminescent green in the dark, reflecting the eerie color from the glowing screen next to his hospital bed. He tried to imagine himself in a time machine, travelling back to his birthday two weeks ago, but it was hard to imagine the confining room to be anything magical.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of steps approaching his room, startling him into throwing himself back on the bed. It was very hard not to flinch when the door opened, but he kept his eyes shut and his body still. His mother's tentative voice came through the crack in the door, "Adam?"
An image of a woman with short grey hair and teary eyes floated through his mind. Silence prevailed for a few seconds before she sighed, "Good, he's still asleep. I better go home and get a bit of sleep, too."
"You should, it was a rough week for both of you." He recognized the nurse's voice.
No kidding. Adam thought.
"The poor woman is devastated." The nurse commented once his mother's steps faded away.
"Imagine this happening to your only child. He's only fourteen." replied a second nurse. The rest of their conversation was muffled as the door to his room closed with a loud click.
I'm not an only child. Adam gritted his teeth and slowed his breathing. He'd lost count of the number of times he'd screamed the truth at their disbelieving faces. He focused his thoughts instead on the open office across the hall, the one with the glowing computer screen and the new password on a post-it note. He might not need a magical room after all.
He just hoped it wasn't too late.
