Emilia's alarm went off at exactly 6:45 am. She groaned, pressed snooze, and went right back to bed. The alarm went off again after ten minutes. Half asleep, Emilia managed to drag herself out of bed and to her bathroom. She glanced over to the mirror, at her reflection. "My hair is a mess." "Oh and is that a new pimple?? Already breaking out on the first day of school. Great." Clearly the day wasn't off to a very good start for her, and it could only get worse; at least that's what she told herself as she combed through her disheveled hair and 'fixed' her cratered skin using concealer. "I'm so ugly...even makeup can't fix my face. No one is gonna wanna be friends with a whale-looking monkey." She sighed to, then winced at what she had just called herself. Glancing over to the clock, she realized she'd be late if she didn't leave nOw. She dressed in the outfit she'd prepared the night before, rushed down to the kitchen, grabbed a bagel and ran out the door. Her mother was on the driveway waiting for her. "Good morning sweetie, are you excited for your first day in 8th grade?" "A little bit nervous I'd say" okay maybe a lot and just a dash of very extremely super insecure. "Oh I'm sure it'll be great!" Her mother was always very joyful—the kind of woman that'd remind you of a high school cheerleader. "I hope" mumbled Emilia. The rest of the ride was silent, until they reached Mackenzie Bloom High, Emilia's new school. She grabbed her backpack, and waved her mother goodbye as she got off the car, hearing her wish her a good day as she drove away. Emilia watched her go. She watched how her mother's car became distant and faded in with every other car...kind of like humans from up above. How insignificant everything is from afar. How alike everything and everyone can seem. From a distance , we are all the same. She thought to herself. She turned and started walking towards her school building, hoping there'd be someone she could hang out with before classes started.
