The flowers bloomed in rows in the greenhouse. They are so beautiful, I wish we could have a garden like this inside our apartment. But the store made up for it. It's my favorite place to be, it's like another realm. It was my father's store before he disappeared one day two years ago. We buried an empty casket, not even sitting among the tulips helped make that day better. Mom and I don't talk about dad, but I feel like she knows something, but she doesn't like to talk about it, she works a lot, not that she complaining anything, we both find comfort in the flower shop. Especially on the days where we have weddings to attend, those are my favorites, I always make sure to bring an extra flower for the bride. And it just so happens that's what I'm doing now, walking among the flowers trying to choose one.
"Celine, you almost ready?" "Almost! Just another two minutes mommy!" I hear her stifle a laugh as she walks out. It's good to hear her laugh, she hasn't laughed in a long time, not ever since dad disappeared. I walk among the rows humming quietly, trying to find the perfect one, until I do. It's white and purple, with more than one blossom on the stem. "Mommy I found it!" I yell over my shoulder to her. She walks over. holding the basket of fresh rose petals for the flower girl. She kneels down beside me with the flower scissors and stops seeing which one I'm pointing to. "Hey Cel? How about we pick another one love." "Why? It's perfect. It matches the colors of the wedding mommy." She sighs, oh boy. "Cel, do you know what this flower is?" I shake my head. I knew every single flower that we grew in our store, but I hadn't ever seen this one before. "Well, you know the stories grandma always tells you before bed? This is a flower from one of those stories." I listen in awe as she speaks, I thought all the flowers my Nana talked about were fiction. "The ones about the elves? Or the wolves?" "The ones about the Wolves cel." I smile as it all comes back. "This is wolfsbane mommy?" She nods smiling. Why would my mom be growing wolfsbane? It's poison...what does my mom need with poison? "It's poison to all wolves, Celine, even humans sometimes get sick when they touch it sometimes. I don't want you to get sick my rosebud." I nod utterly bewildered. I still wanna know why she has this. "Mom? Why do we have wolfsbane if it's poison?" She sighs, smile fading off her face a little bit. "Because...it keeps some certain bugs away from the flowers...they don't like the smell. So, how about we pick something else...why not one of the purple roses?" I nod. Something isn't right here, but there have been fewer bugs in the garden in the last couple months, but how come I haven't seen it before? I'm out here every day. She stands and goes to the rose bush and tenderly cuts a rose from it and brings it back over. "Okay, are we ready then?" She asks, handing me the rose. "Yep. All ready." And very confused. I hold the little flower in my hands and walk with my mom, but the thought of the wolfsbane never strays far from my thoughts.
