Murder Monday

I woke up to the usual sound of my beeping alarm clock, looking for my phone I sit up, half awake at 9AM. BINGO! I slide the red X to the middle of the screen to shut it off. I stand up smelling the scent of fresh air from my open window, looking for a tank top to put on.

BUZZ

I jump back onto my bed and grab my phone. The light hurt my still asleep eyes so I turn down the brightness. I unlock my phone as usual, and check my texts. I don’t even bother to read the name “Scott” as I open the messages app, because I knew it was him, he was my best-friend. I thought it was odd though, for him to text me right now. He’s never up before noon.

Scott: “I’m leaving, and I need your help. Meet me at the coffee shop on the corner of Bliss Street at 10. Do not reply to this message please. Don’t ask questions, just be there.”

Quickly, I went to reply but realized he said not to, so I sat there, thinking. First thought? Why was he leaving? He doesn’t live with his family anymore so it’s not like he’s moving away with them. Second thought, what could he have done to be “leaving”?

Soon, I decided to stop and take a shower because I only had now, 20 minutes to meet up with him. So I hop in the shower, with the words still floating around my head. I’m leaving.

I got dressed, brushed my teeth, and got in my car to drive to the coffee shop. The same place he and I hang out when we aren’t working.

Pulling up, I see him standing outside, looking anxious and carrying a backpack.

I step out into the cool 70 degree air and walk up to him.

“Hey.” I said.

“We don’t have time to talk. I’m leaving, I need your help, and I have to go now.”

“Dude slow down, what’s up?”

“I have to leave, Kyle. I can’t tell you anything, and I need you to drive me.” He replied.

“I can’t – I have work in like, 20 minutes.” I said.

Please.” He said in his convincing voice.

“Fine, but if I get fired it’s on you.” I said semi-angrily.

“We’re going to my uncle’s lake house. Don’t ask why – C’mon let’s go.”

I didn’t even bother replying, I just got into my car and left. I knew where his uncle’s lake house was because Scott throws parties there sometimes. The lake house was only a 20 minute drive and neither of us said anything the entire way there.

As we pulled into the drive way I broke the silence.

“Won’t your uncle notice?” I asked.

“No. He’s on a 3 month business trip in Europe.” He replied barely paying attention.

“Oh.” I said as we walked in.

We walked into the very nice, expensive lake house, and again I broke the silence.

“So why are we here?” I asked.

“Kyle, I need to tell you something, but if you tell anyone it will hurt me. It would ruin me. Will you promise not to tell anyone?” He said oddly.

“Yes, yes, just tell me.” I said.

“Ok,” He stopped to breathe. “Kyle.. I convicted a crime. A bad one.” He said.

I didn’t even say anything, I just gave an expression that said “Like?”.

“Kyle, I –“ He started. “Murdered someone.”

            And my jaw dropped.
