Chapter Two - Liar

I had repeated the story to the officers countless times, but instead of clarifying their doubts, each time they seemed to get increasingly confused. Their facial expressions were twisted up, eyebrows furrowed, lips pressed into a straight line.

"Okay, so if I'm getting this right, you're saying your family was killed by sirens, like the mermaids that sing songs?" Max repeated, and I sighed.

"Yes! Exactly. It sounds crazy, but I'm only telling the truth." Dana and Max exchanged a look.

"We'll be right back Kyoto, Max and I need to discuss for a bit." The two officers stood outside the room and partook in a heated conversation.

Both were shaking their heads, and at one point Dana looked at me sympathetically, as though she was worried for my mental wellbeing. Then again, I'm not sure what I expected from telling two people, adults no less, that my family was killed by some mythical creatures on the sea. The two officers once again entered the room.

"Okay Kyoto, we will look into these sirens. In the mean time, we need to discuss your housing issue. Since you are not old enough to live on your own, we will be sending you to live with your grandmother in California." I nodded obidiently, as Max continued to explain that my stuff was already packed, waiting for me in the car.

I was lead outside to a car filled with agents that were to escort me to the airport and then to my grandmother's. I sat in the back seat, on the very right, and the next thing I knew I had boarded a flight and was on my way to meet my grandmother.

California was the same as it always had been, sunny everyday of the year, cars everywhere. The officers took me to my grandmother's house in silence, shooting me sympathetic glances every now and then. I knocked on the door to my grandma's home, and it swung open almost immediately afterwards, revealing an old lady hurriedly wiping her tears.

"Grammy!" I hugged my grandmother, feeling five years old all over again.

"My sweet, sweet child." The officers looked at her with urgence. "Ky, why don't you unpack your stuff." She said sending me away.

I listened for behind a corner, catching words from their conversation.

"Therapist... recommended... relief... weekly..." A therapist? For what, seeing things that 'aren't true'? It wasn't right, being told you were crazy for believing in something that no one else believed in.

They think I'm a liar. I'm not.

I just needed to prove it to them.

That night, I went to bed early, unable to face the world for a second longer.

Maybe one day I'd wake up and this'd all just be a dream.

It had been weeks since I moved to California, and I had started school as well. But I still couldn't wipe the memory of those scarily gorgeous mermaids. The murderers who destroyed my family.

That's when I promised myself that I would go back to that island on a cruise.

I promised myself I wouldn't let the merpeople go.

I would hunt them down if I had to.
