Wake up, Destiny. I told myself.

I opened my eyes and light filled the room. I sat up in bed and looked up at my knives.

Congratulations, I thought. You are now twelve.

I got up and changed into my shirt and pants. I only had two pairs of clothes, and I slept in the ones I wore yesterday, so, I'm not wearing those. I grabbed my knives and slipped them into my pocket.

I walked into the kitchen and took some bread. I ate slowly. I didn't relize how hungry I was until I had another bite, but I promised myself I wouldn't eat too much. I had to save some for Father and Mother.

I brushed out my hair with my fingers, then tied it into a braid. I looked down at the bread, and couldn't help but take another peice. It was delicious, avoiding the burnt corners. I cut the rest of the bread in quarters. One for me, one for Mother, one for Father. The fourth one, well, lets just say that one dissapeared.

I grabbed my peice of bread and popped it in my mouth as I headed to Mother's room.

"Mother?" I sat beside her as she still slept soundly.

I knew she wasn't awake, but I still sat there. I just waited. It was still early...

~~~
I still stared down at her. As her eyes fluttered open, I was filled with hope. Her head tilted to face me.
"I ate the bread." she managed to say. I smiled at her.
"Still hungry?" I asked her.
Before she spoke, she began coughing. Her face became as pale as paper. I placed my hand on her face. It was very cold...
She probably noticed the worry on my face, because she took my hand and held it. She smiled at me.
I nodded, and a grin formed across my face.
Mother sat up. I haven't seen her do that in a long time. She also got up, too. That was amazing. I helped her change into a shirt and pants.
After a long silence, Mother finally spoke up.
"Today's the day." she choked.
I nodded, words stuck in my throat, forming a blockage of other words I wanted to say. I was terrified.
"You're growing up so fast, Destiny." Mother smiled.
She looked very weak. I motioned for her to sit down. She did...
"We leave in five minutes." she continued. I was about to say something, but it never came out.
"We better just go now..." I managed to whisper, still feeling scared on the inside.
I helped Mother up and we walked out the door. There was already a huge crowd. There was a stage? I wonder when that arrived...
Everybody from District 2 we're deeply staring at the stage. Nobody was on it, so I had no idea why it was so intrigued by nothing execpt a spinning ball with slips of names inside...
A lady with orange and pink hair walked from the crowd onto the stage.
"Hello, everyone," the lady yelled. "My name is Effie Trinket!"
Effie Trinket? She must be the one taking the names out of the ball...
"Everybody exited?" Effie smiled. Nobody did anything.
"Umm... It IS the annual 80th Hunger Games! Let's have some fun!" Still, nobody said a word.
"Oh, what an rowdy crowd," she said, rolling her eyes. She walked over to the ball with the names inside. "Let's begin, shall we?"
Everybody remained in silence. Not even the birds were chirping. All I could hear was the endless spinning... I wouldn't want it to stop. I don't want to hear the people's names being pulled and the utter sadness...
The spinning stopped, and a opening screeched its way open. It sounded very rusty and old.
"District 2's male Tribute is..." Effie pulled out a paper.
"Chase Reftense!"
I looked over across from me, as a boy with emerald green eyes walked away from Rick...
That was the boy Rick was talking to yesterday... No, that was his son. I was filled with fear.
"My only boy..." I heard Rick whisper. I felt horrible.
It began spinning again as the boy walked on stage. I saw tears in his eyes as he looked down at the wooden stage floor.
Effie pulled out another slip. Fear filled my whole body.
"District 2's female Tribute is..." she said. Everbody looked tensed.
"Destiny Crestfall!"
Horror washed over my face as I turned as pale as my mother. I was paralyzed with fear. Mother began to sob, and whispers filled the crowd.
"Destiny...?", Effie repeated. "please, come on stage!"
I didn't want to, but I had to. As I slowly walked closer and closer to the stage, I felt my demise was just at my fingertips.
I walked up, as everybody stared into my eyes. I couldn't hold back the tears as they ran down my cheeks like waterfalls.
"Well then," Effie Trinket had a smile on her face. "Let the games begin!"
As I walked off with Effie and the boy, Chase, I just felt lost. More lost then I ever was before... and Father didn't even come... I looked over at Mother, who was staring at me, no hope left. She was right, it WAS hopeless... I would be gone before I could even say goodbye...
