The Life We Live

Chapter 4

I woke up early the next morning, everyone was asleep. Curious as to who was on watch I walked outside. There was someone sitting in a chair and it took me a few seconds to recognize it was Carl.

"Hey" I said as I walked up to him.

"Hi" he mumbled.

"You okay?"

"Other than the fact that I have a massive headache and feel like I'm gonna throw up, I'm dandy" he grumbled.

"Ahhh the hangover" I laughed.

We sat there for a while in silence. Since I'm usually a shy person I decided to leave but just as I was about to get up he spoke.

"So what's your story?" He asked.

"I already told you guys, my dad was bit and I killed him" I replied simply.

"No, your real story, your life before the incident" he said. I tensed up, no one knows about my real life except Daryl and Merle.

"You don't want to know" I said, shrugging him off.

"Yes I do" he urged.

"For real?" I asked, he nodded his head.

"Fine," I sighed, "I'm not sure if you know but me and Daryl are half-siblings. Same dad, different mom. His mom died in a fire and mine was beaten to death by my dad when he was really drunk. He probably would have done the same to me if it weren't for Daryl. He usually took the beatings for me but dad did... worse things to me. Merle usually just made fun of me or told me to suck it up but Daryl was actually there for me. I'm not sure what I would have done without him. When we were apart it was tough but I have him back now and that's all I could ever ask for."

Carl was quiet for a while and I was staring to regret telling him. Just as I felt the tears forming in my eyes he spoke.

"I caught my mom cheating on my dad" he said.

"Oh... I'm sorry" I said, not sure how to comfort him.

"With Shane" he whispered so quietly I could hardly hear him.

"Really?" I asked in disbelief, he nodded his head.

"Life sucks" I said simply.

"Yeah, life sucks."
