[ CHAPTER ONE ]
"hi, I'm Sarah" i said as I took a seat next to him. He had jet black hair that covered his eyes. underneath they were safari blue and sparkled. He had spiked ring earrings all up his left ear and a small scar on his right cheek. He wore black, ripped, skinny jeans and a simple black fitted t-shirt that had shown how pale he was.
He looked at me and grunted “Jason." before turning back to his doodles. I could tell he didn't want to talk to me but I refused to let that happen. “What have you guys been learning in here?" I asked trying not to annoy him.
“Hell if I know. I don't pay attention in this stupid class, but I think its world war II." I could tell he wasn't too thrilled to talk to me.Jason looked at the clock, then raised his hand and waited for the teacher, Mr. Butts, to call his name.
“Yes Jason," he called, slightly annoyed he had to stop his lesson, “you may go now."
Jason stood up and packed his bag. “Where are you going?" I asked rather loudly. He looked at me saying nothing and walked towards the door. Before he leaves he gives me a quick glance with a wink.
"Sarah, it isn't any of your business as to where he goes. Now pay attention. “ the teacher yells.
Embarrassed, I quickly apologize and stare back at my empty notebook. The teacher turned back to the bored and continues on about his lesson.
Jason had returned, running his fingers through his hair. He had been gone for roughly ten minutes.
I turned to look at him. “If you dont mind, where did you go? It was kinda weird. “He laughs softly "the nurse. For my meds."
“Oh, okay” I shrug. "What time do we get out of this class? It's really boring. “ I was starting to feel really annoying. “Now” the bell rings moments later and everyone packs up their things and leaves.
Jason stayed behind because Mr. Butts had wanted to talk to him.
I didnt want to be too nosey so I packed my things and left the room, waiting for jason out in the hall. The door was open so I heard everything.
“Is it.. any better?" I heard Me. Butts asked. “No.. its getting worse and I dont like talking about it so leave me alone will you. “
jason comes out into the hall moments later and nods “Oh, you waited for me?"
“Yeah.. “ I nod “you're the only person I really know in this school. I hope you dont mind. “ he looked down at the floor “Yeah.. I wouldn't get too comfortable around me, though." He started towards his next class which was science. “Wait!" I called out “why dont I want to get comfortable around you?"
He laughed, even though I knew he found nothing funny “Just don't.. Try to get other friends. “ He walked into the classroom, everyone staring at him. “Late again, Jason”
I whisper “okay" even though I knew he couldnt hear me.
Lunch had come and I was beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed. There were hundreds of kids and several different groups.I scanned the room for an open seat when I spotted jason, all alone. He was playing with his food and doodling in his notebook once again.
Taking a deep breath I walk over to him and sit next to him. “I don't want to be annoying or anything and I know you told me to stay away and make different friends, but I cant.”
He sighed, pushing away his tray. He was staring blankly at the wall before he hid his face in his hands. “oh... im sorry. I'll just leave you alone.” I stood to find another table.
“good,” he turned to look at me “I don't need them talking crap about you too.” He stood up, throwing his untouched food in the trash. He let out a deep sigh then left the cafeteria.
I followed behind him, knowing I had to have been annoying him now. “Talking crap about me too? What do you mean? What do they say about you?”
"Just eat your lunch and avoid me and your year should fly by with no problem.”
His backpack was on his left shoulder when a boy comes up and slams him against a brick wall, causing him to cry out in pain and slide down the wall onto the floor. “what a loser, man..” the boy sneard
I could do two things at that moment. Walk away to eat something, leaving him alone, or to help him up. I go over to Jason offering my hand. “You look like you need a friend.” I say as I smile. He looks up at me, hesitantly grabbing my hand and shakily pulling himself up from the floor.
I could tell he wanted to cry, but he refused to show it. He threw his bag over is left shoulder “thanks." He hung his head and walked out the doors and into the court yard.
“Why wont you let me be your friend?” I began to feel really annoying but I pushed the feeling away. Jason let out sighed “because I don't want them to talk crap about you. You haven't done anything to deserve it.” He stopped walking “if you dont care then feel free to be near me, but they will say some pretty messed up things..”
“like what? What will they say?”
“I dont know,” he sighed “but they will. Im telling you now. Don't say I didn't warn you.” He began to walk away stopping before he opened the door.
"well, I dont care what they say. I've had to put up with a lot before. This shouldn't be much different.” I say as we are greeted by a breeze.
My short brown hair ruffled in the wind.
Jason smiled at the sight, but quickly wiped it off his face when I turn to face him. “i wont get hurt.”“Why are you so persistent on being friends with me?” he asks as he lies on the field wincing in pain.
“Because you look like you could use a friend and being the new girl makes it hard to make friends. Plus I think that if you had a friend you might not get as much crap as you get now.” I explain moving to lie on my back as well. He laughed quietly.
A few minutes later the same boys as before came over to us. “Oh look. It has a girlfriend now. Hey does your girlfriend know about it? You should tell her! You cant keep secrets from your girlfriend, loser!” Jason slowly got up and towered over the boys “I'm not afraid to beat you into a pulp.” they boys laugh “Ooohhh so scary!” they move on still laughing. Jason rolled his eyes and sat back down.
“Don't respond with violence. It doesn't help. It only makes things worse.” I say as I grab his arm gently. “Anyways, what's up with them?"
He sighed “dont, worry about it.. Don't listen to anything they say..” he scratched the back of his neck.
I shrug “okay I guess, but what did they want you to tell me? You dont have to answer me, im just curious.”
jason looks down and sighs “after school, meet me behind the school where nobody else can see.” With saying that he walked off to class.
I sit there for a moment before grabbing my bag and running to catch up to the boy. “Alright,” I nod “I'll meet you there after school. Who do you have next?”
He shrugged “Language arts with Ms. Noland.”
“Cool, I have her too.” I say walking next to him.
“Have a seat anywhere you would like.” the teacher says without looking at me. Scanning the room I spot an open seat next to Jason 'he must really think im annoying' I thought to myself. “ hope you dont mind me sitting here.” he shrugged “its fine”
