Chapter 1-The Virus

Peyton's POV

I walked down the stairs. I was greeted by the sweet scent of "Muffins!" I scream. 

I run into the kitchen. "Morning, Peyton." Aaliyah salutes at me.

"We've got a ration run today." Althea say from the table, her mouth full.

I scramble into the room, tripping. I grab the bowl of muffins and poor them all in my bra.

"PEYTON! WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT MUFFIN DAY?" Aaliyah yells.

"No stealing them all.." I frown.

"Let's go!" Althea busts the door open.

Outside

We walk along the path. The sound of our feet against the crunchy, dead grass soothes me. My mind wanders. "Do you think that birds have sex with their beaks?" I ask. I genuinely think about these things.

"Oh my lord. You are so weird." She lets out a giggle. 

We keep walking. I take in the scenery around us. We decided to take a new path that we discovered on our last run. 

Althea spots some medical supplies and gathers it into her bag. 

The path just led to some random park.

"No walkers ar-"

"Shh." She puts her hand over my mouth.

She points to a willow tree. 

There's a girl with orange-ish hair. She had a cardigan on with a jean skirt. She held onto her leg. A backpack laid next to her. 

She is definitely not a walker. 

"She's human." Althea moves her hand. 

"Help!" The girl yells. 

We run to her. Althea pulls out her gun. I try to stop her, but she holds it to the girl's head. "Who are you? Is that a bite?" Althea howls at the girl. 

"I'm Evie." She moves her hand away to reveal her leg. It's not a bite. There is a large piece of wood piercing it. She's losing blood quickly. 

"Grab her, Peyton. We are gonna get you to safety." She commands. 

I grab her and put her on my back. I start running. 

I hear groaning. "ALTHEA! THEY'RE COMING!"

*record scratch* *freeze frame* You're probably wondering what I mean by 'they'. I'll explain.

About a year ago

The Government Base

I walk into the office. 

Another day of work, I think to myself.

Althea and Ali are eating donuts, chit chatting, and ignoring their duties as government scouts.

"Hey guys!" I wave.

They jump up and hug me. 

"She has drama." Althea points at Ali.

"No I don't!" She yells quickly.

"Tell me." I stared her in the eyes.

Just then, Sean walks in and plants a big, fat kiss on Ali's lips. And she kissed back!

I screamed.

"YOU? AND SEAN?" I howl and she nods.

After I finally stopped breaking down, we got to work.

Filling out papers, answering phone calls, secretly texting Althea pictures of my cat every one in a while. 

Suddenly, an alarms sounds. I've never heard anything like it. It was different then any other standard alarm. It blared high pitched screeches. Our co-worker, Jessie, ran in yelling, "EVERYONE EVACUATE AND GET TO SAFETY IMMEDIATELY!"  

We all stood and ran after her. She held the door for all the workers. "Come on!" I screamed. 

Once all the workers left, she started running.

"What's going on?!" I question another worker. 

"The virus. It escaped the lab. The dead living and walking. They search for flesh." She explained.

I turn around. Then, it happens. 

Jessie gets attacked. She gets tackled by the walker. I run back to her. 

"Go!" She bellows. "I'll be fine!" 

"NO!" I cry.

I watch the walker take a large bite from her arm. Then, her neck. There was no way to save her now. 

Me, Ali, and Althea escaped and are staying in a small place together.

And now, here we are with a stranger that we just found.
